The Master Mind Scholarship is funded by the Flemish Government and offered to high-achieving international students who want to pursue a master's degree at one of Flanders' top universities: KU Leuven, Ghent University, or Vrije Universiteit Brussel. The scholarship covers a significant portion of tuition fees and is awarded based on academic merit, motivation, and demonstrated potential for contribution.
Evidence of deliberate, self-directed growth rather than passive accumulation of credentials. A clear sense of why this scholarship and these universities specifically, not just Flanders in general. A return plan that is credible because it is rooted in something already in motion. A voice that is honest, grounded, and confident without being performative.
1. Paragraph 1 — The Moment That Changed How You Moved:
Open with the specific realisation that marked the shift. Put the committee inside the moment before you explain what followed.
2. Paragraph 2 — What You Did About It:
Show that the internal shift produced external action. Name the habits, questions, and choices that came after.
3. Paragraph 3 — The Work You Built:
Show the evidence. Name the specific thing you built and what doing it taught you about real problems and real follow-through.
4. Paragraph 4 — How You Learned to Learn:
Show how you pursued serious knowledge outside formal settings and what those conversations revealed.
5. Paragraph 5 — Why This Scholarship and Why Flanders:
Connect the scholarship and the universities to your specific direction. Be precise, not generic.
6. Paragraph 6 — The Return:
Close with a specific, credible commitment to return. Name what has been building and what the degree makes possible.
Opening with credentials. What is already in your file does not need to be in your letter. Start where the file cannot go.
Describing growth vaguely. Saying you have developed personally or professionally means nothing without a specific moment, decision, or action that shows it.
Generic praise of Belgium or the universities. Rankings and reputation are not reasons. Name what the environment specifically offers that connects to where you are in your development.
A return plan that sounds like a slogan. "Contributing to my country's development" is not a plan. Show what has already been building and what you are going back to finish.
Sounding grateful instead of ready. The committee is not being thanked. They are being shown someone serious. End with readiness, not appreciation.
1. Does the Master Mind Scholarship require a specific academic background?
No. The scholarship is open to students applying across a range of master's programmes at Flemish universities. What matters is that your motivation is clear, your academic record is strong, and your choice of programme is credible.
2. Do I need to have already been accepted to a university before applying?
Yes. The Master Mind Scholarship requires you to first apply for and receive admission to a master's programme at KU Leuven, Ghent University, or Vrije Universiteit Brussel. The scholarship application follows your admission, not the other way around.
3. Should my motivational letter focus more on my past or my future plans?
Both, but in the right proportion. Your past is the evidence that your future plans are credible. Spend roughly half the letter showing what you have already done and learned, and the other half showing where you are going and why this scholarship is the specific next step.
4. Can I mention community or self-directed work if I do not have formal professional experience?
Absolutely. The committee is looking for evidence of deliberate direction and real-world engagement, not a formal job title. Projects, initiatives, and self-directed learning that produced real outcomes are as valuable as institutional experience when described with specificity and honesty.
5. Is it acceptable to write in a personal, conversational tone?
Yes. A tone that is honest, clear, and human will always outperform one that is formal and impersonal. The committee is reading for the person behind the application. Write like one.
