Paragraph 1
The Relationship You Want to Build
Open with the specific institutional or sectoral connection you intend to create. Name both sides of the relationship and explain what makes it useful to each party, not just to you.
What to include in your essay:
- The specific organisations or institutions on each side of the relationship.
- What you will produce during your studies that feeds directly into that relationship.
- How your existing network makes this more than a plan on paper.
Paragraph 2
How the Relationship Continues After You Leave
Move from what you will do during the fellowship to what you will put in place afterward. The strongest answers describe a structure that continues without depending on your constant presence.
What to include in your essay:
- A specific mechanism for ongoing exchange, formal or informal.
- What each country brings to the other and why the exchange is genuinely two-directional.
- A closing line that frames this as a long-term relationship rather than a one-off transaction.
PARAGRAPH 1
I want to build a working relationship between Nigerian civil society organizations and Irish criminology departments that outlasts my own fellowship. During my studies, I plan to document comparative case studies on pretrial detention that Nigerian policymakers and NGOs can actually use, and to share them back through the network I already have from my current reform work.
Technique:
This paragraph opens with the relationship rather than the applicant, which immediately signals that the goal is institutional rather than personal. The phrase "outlasts my own fellowship" does a lot of work in one line. It reframes the exchange as something being built rather than something being visited. Grounding the plan in an existing network makes it feel executable rather than aspirational.
Breakdown:
"Outlasts my own fellowship" positions the applicant as someone building infrastructure, not collecting experience.
"That Nigerian policymakers and NGOs can actually use" names the end user, which keeps the case studies from sounding purely academic.
"The network I already have" signals that the relationship has a foundation before the fellowship even begins.
