Every year, strong applicants lose fully funded scholarships because their English score arrives too late or is half a band short in one section. This guide gives the actual requirement for each major award in the 2027 cycle, the alternatives accepted, and how to time your test.

The Short Answer

• Most fully funded scholarships do not set their own IELTS score. They ask you to meet the English requirement of the university that admits you.

• For a master’s degree at a UK, Australian, or European university, that usually means IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no section below 6.0.

• Competitive universities and professional courses usually want 7.0 or higher.

• A few scholarships set a fixed minimum themselves. Australia Awards is the clearest example.

• Some scholarships (GKS, MEXT, Türkiye Burslar?) do not ask for an English test at all.

Whatever the rule, the score must be valid on the day the scholarship checks it. Timing catches out more people than the band itself.

Two Kinds of Scholarships

Group 1: the scholarship sets the score. You submit the result with the application. Miss the minimum and you are not considered. Australia Awards and most Fulbright commissions work this way.

Group 2: the scholarship defers to the university. No English rule of its own, but you must hold an unconditional offer by its deadline, so the university’s score becomes your real target. Chevening, Commonwealth, Gates Cambridge, and most DAAD programmes work this way.

Group 2 feels easier. It is not. The university must process your score and lift the condition before the scholarship’s cut-off, so you have less time.

Scholarship-by-Scholarship Requirements for 2027

Chevening (UK)

• Sets its own score? No. Chevening removed its English requirement in 2020.

• What you need: An unconditional offer from one of your three UK course choices by 8 July 2027.

• Typical university target: IELTS 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0. Many Russell Group courses ask for 7.0.

Commonwealth Master’s and PhD Scholarships (UK)

• Sets its own score? No. The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission leaves English to the university.

• What you need: Admission to your chosen UK course. The CSC deadline for 2027/28 nominations is 20 October 2026.

• Typical university target: IELTS 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0, with 7.0 for many PhD and health programmes. Eligible countries are on the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships 2027/2028 page.

Australia Awards Scholarships

• Sets its own score? Yes. This is the strictest award on the list.

• Minimum: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 84 with no sub-test below 21, or PTE Academic 58 with no communicative skill below 50.

• Reduced entry: Women, people with a disability, and some marginalised groups may apply with IELTS 6.0 (no band below 5.5).

• Validity rule: The result must be valid on 1 January 2027 and goes in with the application. No “send later” option.

DAAD EPOS and Other DAAD Programmes (Germany)

• Sets its own score? Partly. DAAD asks for proof of English for every English-taught course, but the exact score is set by each programme.

• Typical range: IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 for most master’s courses; a few programmes ask for 7.0.

• Alternatives accepted: TOEFL iBT (not institutional), often PTE Academic or Cambridge C1, and sometimes a Medium of Instruction certificate.

• Deadline note: EPOS applications for October 2027 close between August and October 2026, a full year before study starts.

Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s (Europe)

• Sets its own score? Each consortium does. There is no single Erasmus Mundus rule.

• Typical range: IELTS 6.5 overall, with 6.0 in each section. Some programmes accept 6.0; a few want 7.0.

Gates Cambridge (UK)

• Sets its own score? No. The University of Cambridge does.

• Cambridge standard: IELTS Academic 7.5 overall with at least 7.0 in each section, or TOEFL iBT 110 with 25 in each section. This is the highest bar in this guide.

• Watch out: Exemptions for degrees taught in English are decided by Cambridge, not the scholarship.

Fulbright Foreign Student Program (USA)

• Sets its own score? Usually yes, through the Fulbright commission in your country.

• Typical range: TOEFL iBT 80 to 100 or IELTS 6.5 to 7.0. Rules differ by country, so read your own commission’s page.

Global Korea Scholarship (South Korea)

• Sets its own score? No English test is required.

MEXT (Japan)

• Sets its own score? No. MEXT does not require IELTS or TOEFL.

• Watch out: Universities running English-taught programmes may still ask for a score before issuing a letter of acceptance.

Stipendium Hungaricum, Türkiye Burslar?, Chinese Government Scholarship

• Stipendium Hungaricum: Set by the host university, usually IELTS 6.0 to 6.5.

• Türkiye Burslar?: No English test required; a preparatory language year is provided.

• Chinese Government Scholarship: English-taught programmes usually ask for IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80.

The Mistakes That Cost People Scholarships

1. Aiming at the overall band only. A 7.0 overall with 5.5 in Writing fails a “no band below 6.0” rule. Most misses are on one section, usually Writing.

2. Taking the wrong version. Scholarships want IELTS Academic, taken at a test centre. General Training and IELTS Online are often not accepted.

3. Letting the score expire. Results last two years. Australia Awards checks validity on 1 January of the study year; UK universities check at enrolment.

4. Booking too late. Results take 3 to 5 days, then the university needs weeks to update your offer. Add a retake and you can lose two months.

How to Reach the Band Before the Deadline

1. Take the target from the university course page, not the scholarship: the overall score and the lowest section score allowed.

2. Find your starting point with a full mock. Sit a timed, four-section online IELTS mock exam on a computer before you book the real test. IELTS is now delivered on computer worldwide, so practise in that format. The mock shows which section is short and by how much, which decides how long you need.

3. Work backwards from the offer deadline. For Chevening’s 8 July 2027 cut-off: real test by early March, results by mid-March, offer updated by April, one retake window left.

4. Use One Skill Retake if only one section is short. IELTS lets you resit one section within 60 days. Most universities accept it; check the scholarship does too.

Can I get a fully funded scholarship without IELTS? Yes, if the scholarship does not require English (GKS, MEXT, Türkiye Burslar?), the university accepts TOEFL, PTE Academic, or Duolingo instead, or the university exempts you for a degree taught in English. Is IELTS 6.0 enough for a scholarship? Sometimes: reduced entry for Australia Awards, and some DAAD and Erasmus programmes. For most UK and Australian master’s courses, 6.5 with no band below 6.0 is the floor.
