2026 Erasmus Mundus European Master's in Clinical Linguistics (EMCL) Scholarship

The European Master's in Clinical Linguistics (EMCL) is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) that has been running for over 20 years. The newest edition is offered by the universities of Eastern Finland (Finland), Ghent (Belgium) and Groningen (The Netherlands). We also collaborate with 23 excellent associated partners.

EMCL-25 is a 24-month, 120 ECTS, full-time research master’s programme that provides students with training in clinical linguistics, neurolinguistics and psycholinguistics. We fund and prepare very talented and motivated students to carry out original research and to be widely employable in academia (PhD) and/or industry (e.g. neurotechnology, clinical sector).

Aim and Benefits of Erasmus Mundus Masters Scholarship

Receive a full tuition waiver and a monthly allowance of EUR 1.400 to cover travel, visa, installation, insurance and subsistence costs. Selected students are eligible for the scholarship award for a maximum of two years – the nominal duration of the Research Master European Master in Clinical Linguistics (EMCL)

Please note that:

• There are a limited number of EMJM scholarships available;.
• Students who have already obtained an Erasmus+, EMJM scholarship or an Erasmus Mundus Master/Doctoral scholarship are not eligible;
• Students benefiting from an EMJM scholarship cannot benefit from another EU grant while pursuing their EMCL EMJM studies;
• EMJM EMCL scholarships are awarded based on the ranking of students during the application and selection procedure;
• On the EMCL application form, you can indicate whether you would like to be considered for an EMCL scholarship (please note the deadline for scholarship applications is December 15);
• Upon the completion of the selection procedure by the EMCL Selection Board, each applicant will be informed (from mid-February) about whether s/he/they is/are offered a place in the EMCL programme with or without a scholarship;
• In case of withdrawal of a student who has been offered a place – and, if applicable, a scholarship – the next student in the ranking receives the offer;

Please note that the EMCL has a limited number of scholarships available for the most outstanding applicants. We highly recommend also to look into other funding opportunities that may be available to you.

EMCL considers individual support and special needs students for equal access to education. Students with disabilities (e.g. long-term physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory impairments), may apply for the acquisition of special items or services (e.g. assistance by third persons, an adaptation of the work environment, additional travel/transportation costs).

The EMCL programme offers a full insurance policy for the two year research master for all students in the programme. Student tuition fees cover insurance that complies with all EACEA requirements and includes:

• Travel insurance (covering loss or damage to luggage);
• Third-party liability (including professional indemnity, if needed);
• Accident and serious illness (covering permanent or temporary incapacity);
• Death (including repatriation during EMCL activities abroad).

Requirements for Erasmus Mundus Masters Scholarship Qualification

Candidates should have at least three years of higher education (BA, BSc or equivalent) with an emphasis on one or more of the following:

• Speech and language pathology
• Linguistics
• Biomedical sciences
• Psychology
• Special education

In addition, candidates must have a high proficiency in English (see below), as the programme is taught in English.

Documents Required for Application

• Completed application form (.doc template)
• Letter of motivation for applying to the EMCL-25 programme
• Copies of your academic curriculum (official transcripts) and a copy of your university degree certificate, plus translations if these are not in English, Dutch, German or Finnish (check the guidelines of the admission office). We accept translations of diploma's and transcripts of records made by the student themselves. You can do this with GoogleTranslate, for example. Authorized translations are no longer required for certified documents.
• Curriculum vitae in EuroPass format, with your photo on the first page. Follow this link to start composing your CV
• Copy of your passport or official ID card
• Language test results or other proof of required English skills (see below)
• Names and email addresses of two referees who will be asked to answer some questions in our portal

Please note that all documents need to be submitted through the portal at the same time. It is not possible to add missing documents at a later stage.

Proof of necessary English skills

Please note that only native speakers (UK, Ireland, Australia, New-Zealand, Canada, USA) do not need to hand in such proof.

• TOEFL iBT: 100 points
• or IELTS of at least 7.0 (each part needs to be at least 6.0)
• or Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency Certificate

The proof of English skills may not be older than 2 years and it needs to be handed in together with the other documents. It is NOT possible to submit it later than the deadline of December 15, 2025.
