Aim and Benefits of Erasmus Mundus Masters Scholarship

The Erasmus Mundus scholarship will cover the following:

• Participation costs of 18000 EUR per programme (incl. tuition fee and full insurance).
• Monthly allowance of 1400 EUR for up to 24 months (includes allowance for installation, subsistence, travel and visa costs).

Requirements for Erasmus Mundus Masters Scholarship Qualification

• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) encompassing at least 60 ECTS in chemistry or chemical engineering and 20 ECTS in mathematics and/or physics.
• The minimum eligibility requirement for application is 66% of the maximum grade available, as the average of all courses included in the transcript.
• English language requirements (see below).

Applicants considering the Uppsala study track: Due to differences in the national systems, there might be differences in the eligibility requirements concerning the previous education. Students intending to follow the Uppsala study track need to fulfil some national requirements related to the diploma-issuing country. More information regarding this can be found here. Please note that if some Uppsala-specific requirements (excluding the requirements set for previous studies) or providing documents differ from the requirements described on the EACH website, follow the rules on the EACH website.

Interview date, Process and Venue for Erasmus Mundus Masters Scholarship

The applicants are ranked based on the following indicators:
1. Average grade of the previous study level (yields 40% of the final score).
2. Motivation letter (yields 30% of the final score).
3. Online test on problem-solving (yields 30% of the final score).

In order to be eligible for ranking and fulfil the minimum requirements (exceed the thresholds specified above) for enrolment in the programme, an applicant must have:

–  at least 66% for the average grade (maximum is 100);
–  at least 51% for the motivation letter (maximum is 100), and
–  at least 51% for the problem-solving test (maximum is 100).

For calculating the final score, points given for the average grade, motivation letter, and problem-solving test are multiplied with their share for admissions score (shares are indicated above). The minimum final score for ranking is 75 points; thus, candidates having a final score lower than 75 points are not considered eligible and cannot be selected for ranking.

Documents Required for Application

2. Official copy of the Bachelor’s diploma or its equivalent and Diploma Supplement (transcript/mark sheet with grading scale) in the original language.

3. Official translation of the Bachelor’s diploma and Diploma Supplement (transcript/mark sheet with grading scale) into English if the documents are not issued directly by the university, translations must be certified. Please read more about the correct translations here.

• NB! In order to be considered official, a diploma or academic transcript must bear a seal and a signature of an authorised official. Photocopies of diplomas and transcripts must be certified. Copies can be certified by the institution that issued the diploma or transcript or by a notary as true copies of the originals. Documents with an Apostille are also considered official. Please see more information on certified documents and translations here.
• NB! Applicants graduating in 2026 and having their diplomas issued later than application deadlines, please submit an application form and the most recent official Transcript of Records by one of the application deadlines. Indicate in your online application, when you will receive all the required educational certificates. Applicants graduating in 2026 will be first offered conditional admission. Conditional admission is valid until the end of July, thus the degree certificate (or other relevant graduation documents) must be sent to Tartu by July 31, 2026, at the latest (but as soon as you receive it). If you expect to graduate later, you cannot be admitted to the programme this year but are welcome to apply for the next year.

4. Simple copy of the passport page stating the applicant’s personal particulars.

5. Proof of English language proficiency. One of the following international tests is required:

• IELTS Academic: Overall mark of 6.5 and no section below 5.5. Copy of the test result is accepted, as it will be verified online by UT. See more information here.
• TOEFL iBT® (Internet-based): minimum score 90. The revised TOEFL® (more information: https://www.ets.org/toefl/test-takers/ibt/about.html). The University of Tartu also accepts the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition test result; see further information here.
• Cambridge English:
  • B2 First – minimum score 173 (more information: https://www.cambridgeenglish.org/exams-and-tests/first/).
  • C1 Advanced (more information: https://www.cambridgeenglish.org/exams-and-tests/advanced/).
  • C2 Proficiency (more information: https://www.cambridgeenglish.org/exams-and-tests/proficiency/).

Applicants who have taken any of the mentioned Cambridge tests must order their result to be sent to the University of Tartu electronically through Candidate Results Online website.

• Pearson PTE Academic – minimum score of 62. Copy of the test result is accepted, as it will be verified online by UT. More information about this test: https://www.pearsonpte.com/pte-academic.

Please note that language certificates issued by other universities are not accepted!

English language requirement is waived only if an applicant can document any of the following:

• has completed secondary education in English in one of the following countries: in EU/EEA member states; Switzerland; UK; USA; Canada; Australia or New Zealand. In the case of EU/EEA member states, the education certificate must include information on the language of instruction.
• has completed secondary education (also known as upper-secondary/high school education) in one of the EU/EEA member states or in Switzerland or in UK and has taken the final exam in English with a result that indicates correspondence to B2 level according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
• has studied in English (with English as medium of instruction), in full-time student status for at least one academic year, in a higher education institution in one of the following countries: USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, UK or any of the EU/EEA member states. The transcript of records must include information that the applicant was enrolled in the programme taught in English.

Please note that applications lacking valid proof of English proficiency will be disqualified and will not be considered further. Applicants must upload the required document by the application deadline. Therefore, please ensure your application is complete before submission.

6. Motivation letter (of maximum 2000 characters, with spaces) where the applicant can demonstrate knowledge of the field, motivation and argumentation skills, relevant study and work experience, and other relevant activities (publications, project management, etc.). Please note that information in your CV is not taken into account. Only the motivation letter is examined. E.g., if you have extensive experience of working in the field or scientific publications then this should be explained in the motivation letter.

The motivation letter should address the following: (1) Please describe briefly your previous study and work experience (if you worked in a team, please highlight what were your responsibilities, without exaggerating them), as well as your personality. What kind of job do you expect in the future? (2) With self-criticism regarding your experiences, explain your limits in analytical knowledge and skills in relation to your future job. (3) How the EACH programme will help you in achieving your future goals as a professional graduated with a master? (4) Justify your choice for the first and second preference for study track (i.e. Tartu-Uppsala, Tartu-Lyon, Tartu-Åbo), with relevant argumentation.

• NB! Please note that the motivation letters will undergo plagiarism check. Motivation letters that display similarities with previous text will be evaluated by the academic board of the EACH programme and in case of serious plagiarism the applicant will be removed from the competition.
• NB! Please also note that using any AI tool for writing the motivation letter is strictly forbidden! In case we detect AI use, you will automatically be disqualified from admission.
• You may be contacted with additional questions concerning your motivation letter.

7. Proof of residence. The proof of residence must include the candidate’s name and exact address during the admission, and the document must be issued not more than 12 months before the application deadline. The following documents are accepted as proof of residence: document from local municipality or other relevant government institution, rental contract, official bank or credit card statement, utility bill, or another similar document.

NB! This document will only be assessed as part of the online application. A hard copy of this document must not be sent to the University of Tartu.

1. Submit the online application form (available below) via the online application system DreamApply by one of the application deadlines specified above. Upload the electronic copies of all the required documents to the online application system DreamApply and add the final version of your motivation letter. Please see country-specific education document requirements here.

• NB! Submitted application (including the motivation letter) cannot be edited. It is only possible to upload new documents (e.g., graduation certificates). Applicants will receive feedback and notifications about their application through the DreamApply system to their e-mail. Incomplete applications or those submitted by e-mail will not be considered for admission.
• NB! Please be aware that only applicants who have submitted all the required documents on time will be eligible for evaluation and ranking!
• NB! Please also be aware that the language test takes time, so please register for a test well in advance! The English test result certificate has to be submitted by the application deadline (see above).

2. Be prepared to take an online calculation test a few weeks after the admission deadline. The problems in the test include the following: calculations of moles and percentages based on molecular formula and weighing data, calculations of solution concentrations, calculations of results of simple analytical determinations (titration, gravimetry, etc.). The applicants will receive a link and log-in handle to the test by e-mail. Please check your e-mails regularly!

• NB! Please note that using any Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool for resolving the exercises is strictly forbidden! In case we detect AI use, you will automatically be disqualified from admission. Also note, that at the start of your studies at UT you will have to take a similar test on-site.

3. In case you are offered admission, you are required to send all the application documents along with your printed and signed application form by post within 3 weeks from the announcement of the offer to:
