The NeuroData Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Brain and Data Science brings neuroscientists and data scientists together in an innovative, specialised programme that will cultivate a new generation of multidisciplinary researchers with in-depth knowledge in both fields, researchers who are highly skilled in investigating the most complex problems faced by the human race – the human mind and brain in health and disease. All students spend the first year at Bar-Ilan University (BIU) gaining a solid basis in neuroscience and neuroscience-orientated data science. The second-year of the programme takes place in one of the neuroscience and data science sub-tracks at one of the consortium’s partner institutions where the students also complete a research thesis.
The NeuroData Master is a collaboration between six leading universities in Israel and Europe: Bar-Ilan University in Israel, Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, in Portugal, University of Jyväskylä in Finland, University of Padua (Padova) in Italy, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in The Netherlands, and University of Zagreb in Croatia.
Graduates of this specialised joint master's degree programme will receive a double master’s degree from two of the partner universities, depending on the choice of study track.

Erasmus Mundus Masters Scholarship
Aim and Benefits of Erasmus Mundus Masters Scholarship
The following rules apply to the award of scholarships:
- Grant of €1.400 per month for each scholarship holder. This scholarship will be transferred to the holder's account. It will be managed by them to support all travel and living expenses for the duration of each edition of NeuroData (2 Years = 24 months). This amount will also have to be used to support the costs for visas or any other permit that may be required for residence in the countries of the partner universities.
- NeuroData will award 10-15 scholarships in each edition, with the restriction that no more than 10% of the scholarships (throughout NeuroData's tenure) will be awarded to students from the same nationality during the program duration.
- Students who have previously obtained an EMJM scholarship are not eligible to apply for an additional scholarship under the EMJM.
- Upon acceptance, students will be requested to sign a student agreement.
Students who will be granted a scholarship will have the following costs covered:
- Health and accident insurance during the whole academic period.
- The registration of the student as a regular student of the partner universities.
- Tuition fees.
- Language courses at each university.
- Access to library and laboratories.
- Student management, services and activities; support in visa application procedures and other local administrative amenities.
- Initial Welcome Week for all NeuroData students.
- Registration and participation in the events organized under the scope of NeuroData.
- All other academic and administrative fees (e.g., Final Diploma, Diploma Supplement).
Requirements for Erasmus Mundus Masters Scholarship Qualification
Language requirements
The teaching language of the program is English. All students must submit a certificate attesting to a level at least B2 in English, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The following international tests are admissible.
- IELTS (Academic Test): 6.5
- TOEFL (IBT) : 85
- Cambridge ESOL (General and Higher Education) : Minimum score required: FCE GRADE B or higher
- Oxford University Press. OTE: Oxford Test of English 126
- Pearson Test of English Academic : 70
The test must have been completed no more than two years before the course starts. Please note that Primary and Secondary Education certificates or 1-year exchange programme documentation are not accepted as English certificates.
Exemption
If you fall into one of the categories below, you are exempt from the English language certificate:
- students with a qualification resulting from a degree programme taught entirely in English;
- native English-speaking students coming from: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Malta, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, United Kingdom, USA;
- students taking a standardised test in English (IMAT and/or SAT), only if the test is a compulsory or preferential requirement for admission to the chosen degree programme.
Educational background
- The recruitment of students for the four double degrees in NeuroData is unified via an Internet portal. Joint admission criteria have been defined in the framework of the already existing degrees; they are extended to cover the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in NeuroData.
- All candidates must have obtained a first higher education degree or demonstrate a recognised equivalent level of learning according to national legislation and practices, with outstanding grades (roughly top 10% of your class) or other study results.
- Students participating in the program must have obtained an undergraduate degree of at least 180 ECTS in brain sciences, life sciences, exact sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, computer sciences), engineering (primarily computer engineering, electrical engineering and bioengineering), psychology and cognitive sciences or equivalent by the time of application. The diplomas and transcript of completed courses and grades are required. In addition, basic knowledge in the following fields is required: general biology, math and programming in python.
- A Candidate currently enrolled in the last year of Bachelor's at the time of application is allowed to apply, provided – in case they are admitted – they submit proof of graduation before the NeuroData programme starts, i.e. before August.
Interview date, Process and Venue for Erasmus Mundus Masters Scholarship
- Eligibility checks the candidates' files are collected via the common application portal and distributed to the members of the Selection Committee. Each committee member does the eligibility check according to the standard rules of the program: Academic ranking, Relevance of the bachelor's degree, Reference quality and relevant additional information.
- Definition of a Pre-Nominal list. The selection committee builds a list of the candidates to interview.
- If the application is among the best ranked and thus selected for the second selection round, the selection committee will contact the candidate for a final face-to-face interview through the Internet. The interview is designed to assess motivation and language skills. During the interview, the knowledge of the candidate in neuroscience and data science is tested but will only serve a minor role in the decision process. In addition, the board members answer questions from the candidate about the program.
- Final and Reserve Nomination list Candidates are assigned to tracks. A final list of nominated students is prepared, considering their preferences and the need to divide the applicants across all tracks homogenously. In addition, a reserve list of names is added to choose new candidates in case some initially selected ones decline to join the NeuroData EMJM. This final list will be announced by the Coordinating Institution to all candidates within the given deadline after the approval of the EACEA agency. The administration board validates the grant attribution. If a nominated student withdraws their application, the next person from the reserve list moves up to take the free place. The final decision will be returned to the selected students so that they can complete the visa procedure before August.
Documents Required for Application
All candidates (applying for a scholarship or under a self-funded scheme) must fill in the online application form and submit it by the given deadlines with the following attachments. Students with double nationality must specify the nationality under which they submit their application. Students may indicate up to three study tracks in order of preference for their second-year specialization and mobility. During the application process, applicants will be asked to rank three institutions where they want to perform the second year of the master's. The selection committee will consider this ranking but does not promise that all applicants will be granted their first mobility selection. Selected applicants will be informed of their assigned mobility pathway. Students can ask to change their second-year mobility during the first year. The Administrative Board will consider this appeal, and its decision will be final. The application will not be processed if any flowing documents are missing.
- A recent passport photo
- A colour scan of the first page of the passport.
- A compelling letter of motivation. No more than 500 words. The motivation letter must convey the candidate's interest in neuroscience and data science their reasons for selecting the NeuroData track.
- A two-page CV using the EuroPass format
- A proof of English proficiency
- A copy of the Bachelor's degree or Graduation certificate translated into English. They need to provide an official enrolment certificate if they have not graduated yet.
- All previous Academic Transcripts were translated into English. All Academic Transcripts should include a calculation of the Grade Point Average (GPA).
- A calculation of the cumulative GPA normalized to a scale of 0-100. For example, if the maximal GPA in your country is 4 and your cumulative GPA is 3.8, then the normalized cumulative GPA is 100*3.8/4=95.
- Proof of residence at the moment of application (A residence certificate issued by the candidate's municipality under standard registration rules or a certificate from the candidate's place of work, study or training issued by the employer or institution in question. This document must have been issued no later than 12 months before the submission deadline for applying for the programme).
- Two recommendation letters by two academics or professional bodies.
- Students with special needs should submit the respective documentation to ensure the required assistance in advance.
