2026 Erasmus Mundus Religious Diversity in a Globalised World Scholarship

The ReD Global (Religious Diversity in a Globalised World) is funded by the European Union, whose aim is to enhance the quality of higher education. ReD Global offers world-class interdisciplinary research in the Humanities and Social Sciences, with a focus on religious identities, diversity, and their impact on global society. 

With the conviction that enlightenment—knowledge—is the ideal antidote to prejudice and discrimination, the project “Religious Diversity in a Globalised World” (ReD Global)  was submitted in 2022 to the European Commission as a EMJM. Granted in 2023, the ReD Global MA is a collaborative project of nine European and Latin American universities. 

Red Global brings together the universities of Groningen, Córdoba, Coimbra, and Bern in Europe, along with the universities of Guanajuato and UNAM (Mexico), the University of Brasília, the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, and the University of Salvador in Buenos Aires. Each partner institution offers unique perspectives on religious diversity, drawing from disciplines such as history, philology, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, politics, and the social sciences to provide a comprehensive and interdisciplinary understanding of the role of religion in a globalised world. ReD Global combines a theoretical approach to religious diversity with practical work at non-academic organisations of Red Global’s network. Students focus on relevant issues such as religious conflicts and migration. The non-academic partners also offer ReD Global’s students internship opportunities, as well as co-supervision for their theses.

Aim and Benefits of Erasmus Mundus Masters Scholarship

Receive a full tuition waiver and a monthly allowance of EUR 1.400 to cover travel, visa, installation, insurance and subsistence costs. 

Selected students are eligible for the scholarship award for a maximum of two years – the nominal duration of the ReD Global MA program.  

Please note that

• There are a limited number of EMJM scholarships available.
• Students who have already obtained an EMJM scholarship or an Erasmus Mundus Master/Doctoral scholarship are not eligible. 
• Students benefiting from an EMJM scholarship cannot benefit from another EU grant while pursuing their ReD Global EMJM studies. 
• EMJM ReD Global scholarships are awarded based on the ranking of students during the application and selection procedure.
• On the ReD Global application form, you can indicate whether you would like to be considered for an EMJM ReD Global scholarship (please note the deadline for scholarship applications is 15 January). 
• Upon the completion of the selection procedure by the Programme Examination Committee, each applicant will be informed as soon as possible about whether s/he is offered a place on the ReD Global programme and  the EMJM ReD Global scholarship. 
• Applicants will be informed from mid-April. 
• In case of withdrawal of a student who has been offered a place – and, if applicable, a scholarship – the next student in the ranking receives the offer. 
•  Several scholarships are specifically allocated to students from selected countries. If you are an applicant from one of the following countries, we highly encourage you to apply! 

*Please note that ReD Global only has a limited number of scholarships available for the most outstanding applicants. We highly recommend to look into other funding opportunities that may be available to you.

Requirements for Erasmus Mundus Masters Scholarship Qualification

• Bachelor's degree in Theology, Religious Studies, Arts (e.g. International Organizations, Middle Eastern Studies, Philosophy), or Social Sciences (e.g. Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology, Political Sciences).
• If your Bachelor's degree is in a field other than Theology or Religious Studies, you will need to demonstrate that you have completed at least 30 ECTS' worth of courses in these fields or directly adjacent disciplines to indicate your suitability for the programme.
• Depending on your former study and courses a reading package will be provided. We assume that you are aware of the concepts and theoretical discussions outlined in this literature at the start of the programme.
• Please note that the level of your previous education will be assessed by the Admissions Office of the University of Groningen due to the selective nature and heavy research focus of the programme. The level of your Bachelor's degree should be comparable to that of the Bachelor's degree granted by the University of Groningen in order to demonstrate your research competences. This level is assessed by the Admissions Office; the Programme Examination Committee does not assess level sufficiency.
• On average, grades for Bachelor-2 and Bachelor-3 courses should be 7.5 or higher (on a scale of 1 to 10). The quality of the bachelor's (or master's) thesis is very important.
• A grade list of the marks of your bachelor's degree programme with an explanation of the followed courses.

All applicants must provide proof of English proficiency by submitting test results from one of the following tests:

Notes:

• If your score is lower than the scores mentioned above, you will not be eligible for the programme.
• Language certificates may not be more than 2 years old
• Any other English test than TOEFL, Cambridge C1/C2, or IELTS is not considered as valid by the ReD Global Programme Examination Committee.
• Only for non-scholarship students: If your test results are not yet available at the time of application, please provide the expected date you will have the test results. You cannot be fully admitted to the programme until you meet the language requirements.

Exemptions:

• Only in the following cases exemptions for the English language requirements are possible:
• You have a Dutch VWO certificate;
• You are a native speaker and have completed your full secondary education in one of the following countries:  the USA, Canada (only when taught in English), the UK, Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand;
• You have completed a full-time Bachelor’s programme (nominal duration of at least three years) in the USA, Canada (only when taught in English), the UK, Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand.

Important:

• If English was the medium of instruction during your previous education, but you do not meet any of the above mentioned requirements, you are still required to provide proof of your English language proficiency.
• ReD Global receives many applications from all over the world; we are forced to be strict in assessing language proficiency. Please ensure that you comply with these guidelines in your submitted application.

Interview date, Process and Venue for Erasmus Mundus Masters Scholarship

• The selection of applicants is carried out by the ReD Global Programme Examination Committee (PEC).

Documents Required for Application

Be sure your Application Form includes the following documents, in the correct format.

1. All documents must be submitted in English or attached to a certified translation.
2. All documents must be attached to the online application form, and in a PDF format.
3. A completely filled out Application Form. 
4. Copy of the photo page of a valid passport. 
5. Certified copy of relevant Diplomas or Graduation Certificates and, if available, Diploma supplements (courses or degree related to the study of Religion and humanities). 
   • If you have not yet graduated, provide proof of enrollment with an expected graduation date.
6. Certified copies of academic transcripts.
   • If you have not yet graduated, provide a list of courses pending completion including course credits. 
   • Explanation of the grading system if the degree-awarding institution uses a different scale. 
   • A Writing sample: could be an undergraduate thesis or other research paper. If you have not graduated yet, an abstract/summary with details on your undergraduate research project/thesis.
7.  Curriculum Vitae in English. You may use the Europass template, but any format is permitted provided it gives a complete overview of your educational background, research and/or professional experience and other achievements. 
8. Official proof of English language proficiency. 
   • If official proof of English language proficiency has not yet been obtained at the time of application, include a statement on when test results are expected. 
   • If you qualify for an English proficiency exemption, provide an official proof. 
   • Please read carefully our language requirements and accepted tests. 
   • Please note that English language certificates may not be more than two years old. 
9.  Motivation letter, of max 750 words, including your preferred ReD Global 2nd semester host institution and reasons for your choice.
10. Two completed reference forms, check the template.
    • At least one reference must be from an academic referee, while the other can be from an academic or professional referee.
    • Optional: official proof of (socio-)economic vulnerability. (Examples: former university’s statement about you receiving a grant for vulnerable students, proof of refugee status, government or municipality-issued proof of low income). If you can not provide proof, you may incorporate relevant circumstances in your motivation letter.
