2026 Flinders University Cancer Survivorship in General Practice in Australia PhD Scholarship

Flinders University is seeking an outstanding clinician PhD candidate for a project entitled: Cancer Survivorship in General Practice in Australia. This opportunity is part of a larger international program of research which aims to: 

1.  quantify the extent to which survivorship care is being delivered in primary care in Australia;
2. define survivorship educational needs of GPs and primary care teams;
3. develop core survivorship competencies for GPs and primary care teams;
4. co-design, implement and evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of targeted strategies for maximising the role of primary care in survivorship including optimising interprofessional collaboration and referrals to allied health using a systems thinking approach, evaluating the effectiveness of different funding models, and elevating the role of the practice nurse.

One PhD scholarship is available to GPs or primary care (practice) nurses/nurse practitioners at Flinders University (Principal Supervisor A/Prof Carolyn Ee).

PhD Scholarship

Aim and Benefits of PhD Scholarship

The scholarship includes:

• a stipend  valued at $35,010* per annum tax free, indexed each year, awarded for 3 years (full-time). A part-time scholarship may be possible – speak to the Principal Supervisor. 
• a Research Training Program Fee Offset Scholarship to cover tuition fees for Australian Citizens, NZ Citizens and Permanent Residents.

An extension of up to 6 months may be applied for.

Requirements for PhD Scholarship Qualification

To be eligible for the award of this scholarship a student must: 

• Have a professional background as a general practitioner and/or primary care nurse or nurse practitioner in Australia; 
• Be an Australian citizen; or New Zealand citizen; or have been granted permanent resident status; and
• meet PhD admission requirements including: have an Australian Honours degree Class 1 or 2A or equivalent qualification (at least AQF Level 8), including a research component of at least 6 months’ full-time study achieving Distinction (75%) OR including evidence of equivalent research experience, such as a substantial first-author refereed publication or track record as an investigator on a competitive grant; and
• be available to commence as a full-time PhD student at Flinders University in semester 1, 2026. A part-time scholarship may be possible – speak to the Principal Supervisor.

Prior to submitting an application for the scholarship, prospective applicants are advised to contact the Principal Supervisor, A/Prof Carolyn Ee via email ([email protected]) to discuss your interest and eligibility in the opportunity.  The Principal Supervisor may invite you to apply and request a written proposal, a copy of your CV together with a covering letter outlining your relevant qualifications, experience, research experience and reasons for applying for the scholarship. 

Applicants will be shortlisted and interviews will be held the week commencing 8 Dec 2025. Outcomes will be released by 17th Dec 2025. 

The successful candidate will ideally begin by February 2026, subject to negotiation (and not later than August 2026).
