AAUW 2025 International Project Grants to Advance Gender Equity for Women and Girls (Up to $10,000 grant)

International Project Grants support community-based initiatives that advance gender equity for women and girls and that are led by AAUW International Fellowship Alumnae. These grants equip and empower alumnae to do so within the context of their home countries and communities by making funding available to them in order to apply their academic expertise and leadership skills in a way that has a direct, positive impact on women and girls.

Aim and Benefits of AAUW International Project Grants

Award Ceiling: $10,000
Grant Term: July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026
Grant funds must be maintained in an account dedicated to project purposes.


Requirements for AAUW International Project Grants Qualification

International Project Grants are awarded exclusively to individuals.

  • Applicants must be or identify as a woman
  • Applicants must be an AAUW International Fellowship alumna and have successfully completed the academic program for which they received a fellowship and all related reporting requirements by June 30th of the year of application.
  • Applicants must reside and implement the proposed project in their home country for the duration of the grant period.
  • Applicants must be the primary project director, with control over all programmatic, budgetary, administrative and editorial decisions.

Citizenship & Immigration Status

Grant recipients must be non-U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Disqualifying Factors

The following are not eligible for consideration:

  • Members of the AAUW Board of Directors
  • Employees of AAUW, including paid or unpaid, part-time or temporary employees, consultants, interns and contract employees.
  • Review Panelists
  • Immediate families (i.e., spouses and dependent children) of individuals described in the points above
  • AAUW International Fellows who did not successfully complete the academic program for which they received a fellowship, and/or who did submit all required reporting in connection with their fellowship.
  • Previous AAUW International Project Grant recipients

Interview date, Process and Venue for AAUW International Project Grants

Selection Criteria

  • A project’s clear alignment with advancing equity for women and girls and ability to directly and positivity impact these stakeholder groups.
  • Strength of project rationale – the project meets a demonstrable local need
  • A clear project design with specific target outcomes and proposed activities and outputs logically connected to the project’s goals.
  • Project proposals must reflect how community/stakeholder participation is considered in the project’s design.
  • Demonstrated capacity of the alumna to deliver quality programming and meet established goals and the feasibility of in a time frame and within a budget that is hat is feasible and reflects stakeholder participation
  • Reflect a commitment to learning and evaluation by (1) incorporating monitoring/evaluation methods that enable assessment of project outcomes; and (2) describing how results and/or learnings from project implementation with stakeholders and/or the communities which the project intends to serve.

Selection Process

Applications to the International Project Grants are reviewed by panels of experts in global philanthropy and development and former recipients of International Project Grants.

Review Process

Prior to the International Project Grant Panel Review, AAUW’s Fellowships & Grants Team reviews applications for completeness and ensures compliance with eligibility requirements.

Documents Required for Application

Applicants are required to submit a narrative project proposal and supporting budget.

Narrative Project Proposal

The required narrative project proposal includes the following components:

  • Abstract
  • Rationale (Need Statement)
  • Description of Community
  • Project Description
  • Community Partners
  • Project Evaluation

Project Budget

An accurate, itemized budget for the proposed project is required, accompanied by a budget narrative.

Prohibited Costs

Please note grant funds cannot be used to:

  • Fund salaries or stipends of the project director or other staff
  • Influence legislation
  • Influence the outcome of elections
  • Carry out voter registration drives
  • Finance fundraising activities
  • Make grants to individuals or other organizations
  • Pay for tuition or provide educational scholarships
  • Renovate infrastructure or initiate building projects
