BIEA 2021 Scholarships for Refugee/Displaced Researchers on the BIEA-RSC Graduate Attachment Scheme

The BIEA have run the Graduate Attachment Scheme (GAS) for many years, supporting a large network of early-career scholars who are interested in research based in Eastern Africa. This academic year (2021-2022), BIEA and the RSC are partnering to offer three attaché positions for refugee / displaced scholars who are interested in graduate-level studies. The three attachés will participate in BIEA research activities and trainings, and work closely with an accomplished mentor to support an ongoing research project related to a humanitarian topic in Eastern Africa. They will also develop research ideas of their own. Each successful scholar will receive a £1,000 GBP stipend to support them during this time. During the current Covid pandemic all Attachments are taking place digitally.

Graduate attachés will be involved in three types of work while at the BIEA.

1. Attachés will develop specific research interests in the region, gaining practical experience of conducting research by working as a research assistant on innovative historical, archaeological, anthropological, political science and/or legal projects, gain trainings in research methods, and meet a variety of active researchers.
2. They will assist with the administration of the BIEA, participate in BIEA activities (including reading groups focused on key texts in African studies, workshops and seminars), and have the opportunity to take a beginner’s Kiswahili class.
3. They will conduct their own research usually leading into developing a plan for a Masters or PhD. Their attachment involves the presentation of a paper in the BIEA Completion Seminar Series upon some aspect of the research they have carried out during their time at BIEA.
