Aim and Benefits of Brunel University Medical School International Scholarship

Value: Each scholarship has a total value of a 15% fee discount off the annual tuition fee across the duration of the 5-year course, (for example, the tuition fee will be reduced by 15%  in year 1, 15% of the year 2 tuition fee, etc) subject to satisfactory progression. The scholarship award will be deducted from the annual tuition fee only; it will not be awarded as a cash payment.

Requirements for Brunel University Medical School International Scholarship Qualification

1 To be eligible for a Brunel Medical School International Scholarship an applicant must:

• Apply for and fulfil the academic criteria for admission to the Brunel Medical MBBS programme.
• Be in receipt of an offer to study on the full-time MBBS programme starting in September 2024 and have paid the deposit by the deadline, which is normally at the end of May 2024.
• Applicants must meet all conditions of their offer by the time they are due to register at Brunel.
• Must be classed as an overseas fee-paying student based on the UK regulations. Applicants who are unsure of their fee status should note Brunel uses the information they have provided in their application form to assess fee status against regulations set by the UK government. For information on these regulations please visit the independent organisation UKCISA’s website
• Brunel Medical School International Scholarships are open to students who need to undertake an English Language course at Brunel Language Centre (BLC) prior to starting the MBBS.

2 Those not eligible for these scholarships:

• Applicants NOT classed as overseas for fees purposes based on the UK government regulations, or those with an unresolved fee status.
• Applicants sponsored by their home governments.
• Applicants who will NOT commence their course in September 2024.
• Brunel graduates awarded the 15% Graduate Discount applied to the net tuition fee.

The Brunel Medical School Admissions team will be responsible for reviewing the eligibility of students.

Interview date, Process and Venue for Brunel University Medical School International Scholarship

Selection process:

There are two parts to the selection process: 

Step 1: Shortlisting for Scholarship Interview by BMS Admissions Committee

• The BMS Admissions Committee will review the top-ranked candidates based on their Virtual Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) score and will consider for shortlisting those who have secured their place by paying the course deposit;
• In the event that there are applicants with equal MMI scores, comments by MMI Assessors, candidates’ academic grades, personal statements and references may be considered in determining those who will be shortlisted;
• The Admissions Committee may moderate the shortlist to prioritise candidates with under-represented characteristics in the short-listing for scholarship interviews.

Step 2: Scholarship Interview

• The scholarship interview will be held online and will involve a short presentation and discussion with the Interview Panel. Candidates will be assessed during the presentation discussion according to the following criteria:

(1) Aspiration to contribute to the School in alignment with the School's mission and vision 

(2) Evidence of leadership experience

(3) Commitment to the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion

(4) Aspiration to contribute to the medical profession after graduation in alignment with the School’s mission and vision

(5) Organisation of thoughts and clarity of communication.

1.2 Interview Panel: The Interview Panel will include a minimum of three Panellists, to include the Chair, at least one clinician and one impartial person (the impartial party will not be a member of Brunel University staff, will not be trained, qualified, or experienced in Medicine, but will likely have a background in education). The Panel will be chaired by the BMS Academic Head of Admissions.

1.3 Award schedule: The scholarships will be awarded after the interviews: 30 June 2024. Awards will be finalised once all offer conditions have been met, this is typically end of August, early September.

1.4 Medical School expectations from scholarship holders: Scholarship holders will be expected to represent the Brunel Medical School throughout their time at the University and to participate occasionally in various activities to help promote the School. This might include hosting tours of the campus and its facilities, providing support at Open Days, participating in social media, videos/photography and other marketing activity as required. Our scholarship holders are expected to be engaged in the organisation of student social activities.

1.5 Data: Data pertaining to bursary/scholarship holders such as: progression rates, degree attainment, degree completion, and graduate outcomes may also be analysed in order to understand the effectiveness of bursaries and scholarships. This data may also be linked to other data already held by the University for the purpose of better understanding the impact of bursaries and scholarships.

 Allocation:

1 Applicants who meet the eligibility criteria at the time of allocation will be considered for scholarships using the information provided at the time of their course application only and cannot be considered should their circumstances change during the course of their studies. Scholarships cannot be backdated. 

2  Applicants will be shortlisted on the basis of their MMI score. Shortlisted applicants will then be assessed using the criteria described above under Step 2.

3 In the event that there are applicants with equal MMI scores, comments by MMI assessors, applicants’ academic grades, personal statement and references may be considered in determining who will be shortlisted.

4 Scholarships will be awarded by the Admissions Committee and all decisions are final.

5 The University will not accept any appeals in respect of the decisions made by the Admissions Committee.

6 Scholarships will be officially awarded once all conditions have been met. The Brunel Medical School will contact successful applicants by 15 September 2024.
