Brunel University London 2022 PhD in Life Cycle Assessment of CHP for UK and EU Students

Applications are invited for PhD studentship funded by EU project Resilex starting 1 October 2022. One of these projects is Life cycle Assessment of CHP exhaust carbon capture and utilisation. Successful applicants will receive an annual stipend of £18.000 including outer London allowance plus payment of their full-time tuition fees for a period of 36 months (3 years).

Background: An innovative project to reduce and reuse CO2 emissions from Combined Heat and Power engines has been named a winner of Ofwat’s second Water Breakthrough Challenge. The project will turn carbon into useful products like paint and fertiliser, saving five million tonnes of CO2 per year and making the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) process – where heat as a by-product of renewable energy generated is captured and used – carbon neutral. The water sector has a long history of renewable energy generation, significantly reducing reliance on grid-imported electricity, benefitting the environment, and keeping customer bills low. Please see the links for further information:

This PhD project is on the Life Cycle Assessment, Tecno-economic assessment and Circularity assessment of the technology to capture CO2 from CHP exhaust emissions at industrial scale. The student will quantify and demonstrate the benefits of capturing and putting to beneficial use the C02 that is currently unavoidably emitted to the atmosphere in CHP engine exhaust and in the process. For this, we will build upon recent developments in the assessment of CCU and industry-standards developed by the Global CO2 Initiative. In addition, the research will confirm further carbon savings associated with replacing intensively mined natural resources.
