About Croucher Foundation
Croucher Foundation is an independent private foundation dedicated to promoting the standard of the natural sciences, technology and medicine in Hong Kong. We are funded by a trust established by the late Noel Croucher in 1979. Our work is organised into five broad areas:

Croucher Foundation Scholarships for Doctoral Study
Aim and Benefits of Croucher Foundation Scholarships for Doctoral Study
As a Croucher Scholar, depending on your circumstances, you can expect to receive the following benefits:
- An annual maintenance allowance, currently set at USD38,850 per annum;
- Payment of your tuition fees and college fees (where applicable);
- A one-way premium economy class airfare at both the beginning and end of your tenure;
- A one-off arrival allowance of USD1,000 to cover the costs of arriving in a new country during your first year of tenure;
- An academic development allowance of up to USD2,000 per annum to allow you to attend conferences, workshops or courses during the tenure of your award;
- A medical insurance allowance of up to USD2,000 per annum to cover medical insurance costs or health surcharge;
- A family allowance, where applicable, of up to USD16,000 per annum for your first child and up to USD6,800 per annum for every additional child who lives with you during the entire duration of the award;
- A commencement award of USD9,700 to be offered towards the end of your doctoral studies to cover the cost of thesis preparation and travel expenses for you and your family to attend your graduation ceremony;
- And, if you are interested in a science education, we will grant you an allowance to support well-designed activities and projects in schools and the wider community. You would need to submit a simple proposal for this. Your programme of activities should be designed to involve local school students, teachers, families and/or other non-specialist audiences in dialogue and debate. It should be completed within the period of your award.
Croucher Foundation Scholarships for Doctoral Study Courses
Requirements for Croucher Foundation Scholarships for Doctoral Study Qualification
Croucher Scholarships allow you to devote yourself to a period of full-time study or research in natural sciences, medicine or technology in approved academic institutions outside Hong Kong, leading to a PhD degree.
To be eligible to apply, you must:
- Be a permanent resident of Hong Kong;
- Have either;
- Gained First-Class Honours or equivalent qualifications in your first degree, or
- Have, or expect to have, a higher degree (e.g., MSc or MPhil degree) by September 2025.
Please note that an MPhil transfer to doctoral candidature is not considered equivalent to an ordinary MPhil or MSc.
You are also welcome to apply if you are in your final year of your first degree, but any offer of an award will be conditional on your gaining First-Class Honours or equivalent qualifications by July 2025.
Interview date, Process and Venue for Croucher Foundation Scholarships for Doctoral Study
Short-listed candidates will be invited to attend an interview in March/April 2025.
If you are not contacted by late April, you may consider that you have not been shortlisted. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide feedback on unsuccessful applications. We aim to write to unsuccessful applicants by late May, if not earlier.
Documents Required for Application
Please make sure the following documents have been uploaded to your application:
- Your proposal, which should include:

- A description of the research you wish to undertake;
- The names of potential supervisors and their research groups;
- A description of your research experience;
- A list of your publications (where applicable).
Notes:
-
- Your proposal can be up to 6 pages in length.
- Once your proposal has been submitted, it cannot be amended.
- Copies of your HKCEE and HKALE or HKDSE certificates or equivalent qualifications and copies of official transcripts of your university records;
- Copies of reprints of up to three of your most significant publications (if applicable);
- Documentation to prove that you are a permanent resident of Hong Kong, which is a pre-requisite for the award.
Note:

- If you choose to send copies of your ID card, please make sure that both sides of the card are provided.
- All documents should be sent as PDF files (unencrypted), with a maximum size of 8 MB each.
- We will not be able to proceed with your application if there is any doubt about your residential status; for example, because you have not provided the right documentation.

Deadline
Your application should be submitted via the Croucher Foundation’s online application system. For the 2025–26 selection exercise, your application must be submitted by 5pm (Hong Kong time) on 15 November 2024.
What you need to send us
Please invite two referees to provide signed letters of reference on your behalf.
These should include your full name and be written on official letterhead.
