Characterising and Valuing of Health Impacts of the Transition to Zero Emission Technologies 2025

There has been extensive assessment of the environmental impact of emerging zero emission (ZE) vehicle technologies, including battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell variants, across multiple modes of transport. Adoption of these technologies is growing rapidly. It is forecast that by 2040 up to 83% of all bus sales globally will be zero emission technologies. However, to date there has been little assessment of the wider health impacts of the transition to zero emission vehicles. Indeed, there is not even consensus on the methods for reporting them. This line of research is still very much in its infancy, with only a small number of published studies. Currently, there is no consensus on a framework for reporting the health impacts from these wider system level changes resulting from the operation of ZE vehicles. This is the context in which this PhD research will propose a framework to explore the complex system level technology – health – societal- economic relationships, to more fully understand the costs, benefits and risks of operating ZE bus technologies. Given the broad nature of the topic, it will be suitable for applications from a range of disciplines, for example, public health, economics, business, engineering. The project has important policy and practice implications. The PhD will be fully supported by Wrightbus, recently named as the fastest growing bus manufacturer in the UK and Europe.

Aim and Benefits of Characterising and Valuing of Health Impacts of the Transition to Zero Emission Technologies

1 EU citizens in the EU Settlement Scheme, with settled or pre-settled status, are expected to be charged the NI or GB tuition fee based on where they are ordinarily resident, however this is provisional and subject to the publication of the Northern Ireland Assembly Student Fees Regulations. Students who are ROI nationals resident in GB are expected to be charged the GB fee, however this is provisional and subject to the publication of the Northern Ireland Assembly student fees Regulations.

3 EU Other students (excludes Republic of Ireland nationals living in GB, NI or ROI) are charged tuition fees in line with international fees.

Requirements for Characterising and Valuing of Health Impacts of the Transition to Zero Emission Technologies Qualification

The minimum academic requirement for admission to a research degree programme is normally an Upper Second Class Honours degree from a UK or ROI HE provider, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University.
