The Dalhousie Research Excellence Scholarship was established in 2024 to attract and support new Dalhousie PhD students with exceptional leadership and research potential. Award recipients represent Dalhousie’s emerging leaders, with significant regional, national or international impacts expected from their research.

This award is valued at $35,000/year and will include funding from a combination of sources. The specific sources of funding will be communicated to successful applicants by the department following acceptance of the award.
Recipients who later apply to and receive additional major awards (e.g. Tri-agency Doctoral Awards, Scotia Scholar) will have those external awards topped up a maximum of $40,000/year ($13,333/term), after which the Research Excellence Scholarship will become honorary. Scholarship recipients may also receive additional funding beyond the award value through stipends or other sources negotiated with their supervisor/program of study.
