The Dr Peter Crossman Scholarship has been established as a bursary to assist James Cook University Students who reside at The John Flynn College. In 2025 a single scholarship is valued at up to $9,240 per year for up to 3 Years, or 50% of the annual residential accommodation fee for a standard room.
The purpose of the scholarship is to provide students from diverse backgrounds (who may not have the capacity to pay full college fees) with the opportunity to reside at The John Flynn College. Recipients must demonstrate academic excellence in their studies and a commitment to the wider community. Recipients are eligible to apply for the same scholarship in years two and three of their college residency.

Aim and Benefits of James Cook University (JCU) Postgraduate Scholarship
- The successful applicant of this scholarship you will receive up to $9,853 per year for up to 3 years, paid in two equal instalments after Census date of Study Period 1 and Study Period 2. Payment will be made by crediting their John Flynn College account.
Requirements for James Cook University (JCU) Postgraduate Scholarship Qualification
- Australian or New Zealand citizen or the holder of an Australian permanent resident visa or permanent humanitarian visa; and
- You are or will be enrolled full time (at least 9 credit points per semester) at James Cook University in my first year of enrolment in an undergraduate bachelor or diploma course as at the census date for study period 1 and 2; and
- Have not previously completed a bachelor degree
- You can demonstrate that my home is so far from James Cook University Townsville (Bebegu Yumba campus or City campus) that daily travel for full-time internal study is impracticable
- You can demonstrate academic excellence in my previous studies
- You can demonstrate educational, social and/or financial disadvantage
- You can demonstrate contribution to the wider community, through activities such as community service and participation in academics, arts, music, culture or sports; and
- You can demonstrate my ability to uphold the values of the College.
Interview date, Process and Venue for James Cook University (JCU) Postgraduate Scholarship
In establishing the selection criteria and ranking methodology, the Selection Committee will afford consideration to the following criteria:
- The applicant's academic merit;
- The extent of the applicant's educational, social and/or financial disadvantage;
- Any other criteria that the Selection Committee deems appropriate.
If an applicant is unable to adequately prove their claims against the selection criteria to the satisfaction of the Selection Committee, the applicant ceases to be eligible for the scholarship.
Applications will be ranked using the methodology determined by the Selection Committee.
The time of notifying successful applicants will be determined by the Selection Committee having regard for when the successful applicants will be notified of their successful admission to James Cook University.
Documents Required for Application
Applicants must attach to the official form:
- A personal statement of no more than two pages addressing the eligibility criteria.
- A copy of of a document to prove that you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen or the holder of an Australian permanent resident visa or permanent humanitarian visa.
- A character reference from a person other than a family member, demonstrating your contribution to the wider community and your ability to uphold the values of the College.
- Any other supporting documentation that would assist the Selection Committee in assessing the merit of the application
