EEC 2022 Bertha Justice Fellowship Programme for South African Law Graduates

The Equal Education Law Centre (EELC) is a registered law clinic whose staff of social justice lawyers specializes in education law and policy, through conducting public interest litigation, legal research and advocacy, and community lawyering, to advance the right to equitable, safe, and quality basic education in South Africa. The EELC also aims to develop young, skilled attorneys and law graduates in public interest litigation.

About Equal Education Law Centre (EELC)

Founded in 2012, the EELC is registered as a law clinic with the Cape Law Society and its staff of social justice lawyers specialise in education policy, legal advocacy, community lawyering and public interest litigation. The EELC engages in strategic litigation regarding major issues surrounding long-term educational reform, as well as working on individual cases arising from experiences of learners, parents and teachers, such as expulsions, disciplinary matters and access to schools. The EELC provides legal services and represe... continue reading

Requirements for Bertha Justice Fellowship Programme Qualification

  • An LLB degree (completed by January 2023)
  • A demonstrated interest in human rights work and social justice
  • A strong interest in research as a component of lawyering
  • Demonstrable oral and written communication skills in English
  • Analytical skills, good presentation skills, and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in other South African languages will be an advantage
  • Computer literacy and excellent legal research skills.
  • A commitment to high-quality client service.
  • Ability to make a two-year commitment to articles at EELC

  • A covering letter detailing your interest in human rights, social justice, and the work of the EELC, and motivating why you have the necessary motivation, qualifications, skills and experience for this position.

Please note that we are looking for candidates who wish to pursue a career in social justice, rather than just securing articles.
