The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master on Coordinated Humanitarian Response, Health and Displacement (“Human Response”) aims to provide a unique multidisciplinary programme, uniting European and African universities in teaching about life-saving assistance and displacement in volatile contexts.
This is now a possibility through a new post-graduate training offered by Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon (Iscte),in partnership with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), in Norway, the Makerere University (MAK), in Uganda, the University of Cape Verde (UniCV), in Cape Verde, the University of Santiago (USant), in Cape Verde, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), in Greece, and the University of Rovuma (UniRovuma), in Mozambique.
The “Human Response” Master?establishes an educational platform where European and African partners build a resilient global workforce to tackle future humanitarian crises. Amidst ongoing conflict and escalating climate disasters,?HumanResponse?addresses the pressing need for professionalisation of humanitarian workers through:
- a specialized and multidisciplinary post-advance programme (EQF Level 7, two-year, and corresponding to 120-ECTS),
- fostering South-North collaboration and multi-stakeholder cooperation,
- strengthening localized leadership, and
- articulating theory and practice to navigate organizational complexity in humanitarian action.

Erasmus Mundus Masters Scholarship
Aim and Benefits of Erasmus Mundus Masters Scholarship
- Student scholarships are allocated as per the Erasmus Mundus guidelines for 15 scholarships per edition.
- Each student will be allocated 1400 Euros per month.
- Students with scholarship do not pay fees.
- 24 months insurance is provided to all students.
Note: students who have already benefitted from an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master (EMJM) scholarship are not eligible to apply for an additional scholarship.
Requirements for Erasmus Mundus Masters Scholarship Qualification
- The programme welcomes applicants from diverse academic backgrounds relevant to humanitarian response (e.g., health sciences, public policy, engineering, social work, international relations, political science).
- Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree, demonstrate English proficiency, and will be selected based on academic merit, relevant experience, and motivation for a career in humanitarian response.
- Scholarships are available through the Erasmus+ programme for eligible candidates.
- Students also have the option to self-fund their studies.
Documents Required for Application
Mandatory documentation to upload is:
- Valid Passport
- Photograph
- Diplomas (from previous degrees completed)
- Transcript of records (diploma supplement) with all courses and grades (from previous completed degrees)
- English proficiency test results certificate (from one of the required tests). Code for certificate validation.
- Curriculum vitae
- Statement of purpose (mandatory to upload a pdf document)
- 2 signed and dated Recommendation Letters
All of the identified documentation is mandatory. Applications missing any of the above mentioned documents will not be considered as eligible.
Erasmus Mundus Human Response applicants do not need to pay application fees.
Only candidates with a Bachelor degree (180 ECTS) can be admitted.
Proof of English proficiency is mandatory.
- Applications not submitting test certificates or submitting expired tests will not be considered as eligible.
- Applications submitting certificates with scores lower than the indicated for each test will not be considered as eligible.
- Tests will only be considered valid if taken up to 2 years and 5 months before the application date. (The expiry date of the certificates indicated by the institutions responsible for the tests shall prevail if the period indicated is less than 2 years and 5 months).
Accepted tests of English proficiency and minimum scores are:
- TOEFL (iBT, MyBest, or at-home)
- IELTS Academic (International English Language Testing System)
- PTE Academic (Pearson’s Test of Academic English)
- Cambridge English C1 Advanced (formerly known as CAE)
- Cambridge English C2 Proficiency (formerly known as CPE)
- Duolingo English Test
- Duolingo English Test – With a minimum overall score of 135 with no less than 100 in any component.
Candidates are exempt of English proof of proficiency if:
- They are from a country where English is the official language and where they attended and completed secondary education (proof of completion of secondary education in that country must be provided).
- They have attended and completed a secondary level of education certified by an International Baccalaureate or the IGCSE corresponding level (proof of completion of secondary education in those programs must be provided).
- The language of instruction during the entire BA programme was English – in this case, the language of instruction must be clearly stated on the diploma/transcripts. Alternatively, you can submit a stated and signed letter from the Academic Registrar’s Office, the Examinations Office, or the equivalent office that issues official documents of records at your university.
Candidates may be called for an interview to attest English proficiency level
