The Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies offers one-year Jean Monnet Fellowships to scholars who have obtained their doctorate more than five years prior to the start of the fellowship, i.e. 1 September 2027 for the academic year 2027-28. The Fellowship programme is open to post-docs, tenure-track academics and those wishing to spend their sabbatical at the Centre. The Centre offers up to 20 fellowships a year.

Aim and Benefits of Jean Monnet Fellowships Fellowship
Residence
- Fellows must live in the area of Florence for the duration of their Fellowship so that they can take an active part in the academic activities of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies.
Publication
- The research done during the fellowship should lead to a publication, either as an EUI Working Paper, or in a scientific journal, or with a reputable academic publisher.
Grant
- The basic grant is € 2,850 per month.
- Successful applicants who receive other grants or salaries must disclose this to the EUI. The amount of the Fellowship will be fixed at a lower rate (minimum €2,100 per month) depending on the amount of the additional income (upon production of relevant supporting documents).
- If applicable, family allowances will be added to the basic grant (see below).
Family allowance
- A household allowance of up to € 310 per month is paid to Fellows with a partner if the partner lives with them in Florence and on condition that the partner's income is less than € 2,000 per month. The sum of income and allowance cannot exceed € 2,000 per month (i.e. if the income is more than € 1,690, the allowance will be paid only to top up to € 2,000).
- There is a dependants allowance of € 210 per month for each dependent child if they live with the fellow in Florence.
- Fellows are entitled to these allowances if they can declare that they are not receiving any similar allowance from another source, and upon production of relevant documents (marriage certificate or a document that proves you are living together in Florence, birth certificates).
- For dependent children in full-time education and over the age of 18, a school or university certificate is required. No allowance is paid for dependent children over the age of 26.
Taxation
- The fellowship is not taxed by the Institute. Fellows are, however, required to comply with any other tax provisions which may be applicable to them.
Medical insurance
- Fellows must have adequate medical insurance cover during their stay at the Institute. They can either provide proof of their own insurance scheme or subscribe to the EUI's private sickness and health insurance scheme at their own expense. See the Cigna Insurance Scheme for conditions.
Research Expenses
- All fellows are entitled to 650 EUR for eligible research expenses, such as attendance at conferences.
Travel expenses
- Fellows (but not their families) receive reimbursement for the incoming trip from their place of origin to Florence, and for the outgoing trip to their destination at the end of their fellowship.
- First-class rail (travel by car is also reimbursed on this basis)
- Economy class air fare
- The maximum amount for travel reimbursement is €1,200 including both incoming and outgoing trip. Reimbursement of higher amounts and any extra costs can be authorized by the Centre Director upon a justified special request. Taxi expenses are not reimbursed.
Visa and Immigration
The EUI assists non-EU fellows with visa and residence requirements. Assistance can also be provided to their non-EU family members (i.e. spouses and children). For additional information, please check the Welcome and Life in Florence webpage.
Fellows who need a visa for Italy in order to take up the fellowship are entitled to a reimbursement of costs related to obtaining a visa (consular fees and travel costs to the nearest consulate) up to a maximum of € 250, on the basis of supporting documents.
Removal/installation expenses
There is no provision for removal or installation expenses.
Requirements for Jean Monnet Fellowships Fellowship Qualification
- The fellowships are open to candidates who have obtained their doctorate more than 5 years prior to the start of the fellowship on 1 September (to apply for 2027-28, the Ph.D. should have been awarded before 1 September 2022).
- Candidates of all nationalities are eligible for the Jean Monnet Fellowships.
Interview date, Process and Venue for Jean Monnet Fellowships Fellowship
- Jean Monnet Fellows are selected on the basis of a research proposal and of their CV. The research proposal should fit well with one of the Centre’s main research themes, programmes and projects.
- Candidates are selected by the Academic Staff of the RSCAS and their nomination needs to be approved by the Executive Committee of the EUI. This decision is final and not subject to appeal. No individual feedback will be given on research proposals of non-selected candidates. In case a reserve list is drawn up, places can be offered to reserve candidates if selected candidates do not accept the offer of a fellowship.

Please use standard international fonts, do not use macros, special characters or password-protection.
The Letter of Motivation and Research proposal should also meet the requirements established by the EUI Guidelines for the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence for Research. In particular, candidates should refrain from having Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) autonomously write substantial or integral parts of the documents. When using AI to produce novel content, they must acknowledge and reference the parts of the content that have been AI-generated.
Letters of Reference
- Applicants should provide the names of two academic referees and ensure that at least two letters of reference are submitted online directly by the referees by the deadline 23 October 2026 (14:00 CEST). References will not be accepted after the deadline.
- References from current full-time or part-time EUI professors will not be accepted.
Letters of References
Your referees will be contacted and will be allowed to submit the reference only after you have completed and registered the first step of the online application form including the names and contact details of referees. In order to receive the references in time by the deadline, you should register the referee details as soon as possible . This is possible at any time, and you do not yet need to submit the final version of your application at that time.
When you register your referees' contact details in the online application form, an email requesting a reference on your behalf is automatically sent to the referees you have nominated. Nevertheless, it is your responsibility to contact referees directly to inform them of your request, to verify that they have received the email request and to ensure that they submit the reference by the deadline. Please note that reference letters can be submitted by the registered referees (before the deadline) even after you have submitted your application. Registered referees may contact the Academic Service in case of questions or problems by emailing [email protected].
Notes for Referees
Once the candidate has registered the details of their referees, each referee will receive an e-mail with access details for submitting their reference letter online.
- References should be submitted as PDF files. Please use standard international fonts; do not use macros, special characters, password protection, electronic signatures or logos.
- Do not send a hard copy.
- You may write in a language other than English, but English will guarantee the widest possible reading.
- References from current full-time or part-time EUI professors will not be accepted.

- You are encouraged to register your application, by inserting your personal details and referee details as soon as possible. This is important to allow sufficient time for your referees to submit the reference letters before the deadline. References will not be accepted after the deadline.
2. Submit your application by the deadline 23 October 2026 (14:00 CEST).
- Once you have registered your application, you may continue to work on the application details and attachments until the deadline of 23 October 2026 (14:00 CEST). Submit the application only when you have filled in all the information correctly and have successfully uploaded the final version of the attachments.
