Flinders University 2023 The Bob Dunstone Rural Placement Scholarship

The Bob Dunstone Rural Placement Scholarship has been established to support students to undertake a work integrated learning placement in a rural or remote location in 2022. It has been funded via a donation from Vivienne Dunstone.

The Scholarship is available to students with a genuine interest in working in, and contributing to, regional communities.

Aim and Benefits of The Bob Dunstone Rural Placement Scholarship

Each Scholarship will be $250 per week of placement up to a maximum of $2,500, the value will vary depending on the placement length.  Additional funds may be available for students travelling to remote areas (RA5) for their placement.

There will be a minimum of two scholarships available per year.


Requirements for The Bob Dunstone Rural Placement Scholarship Qualification

Applicants for the Scholarship must:

  • Be enrolled full-time in a coursework degree at Flinders University*; and
  • Have a full-time placement in the year of the Scholarship^; and
  • Be undertaking the placement in a regional or remote area defined as RA2 – RA5 by the Australian Statistical Geography Standard Remoteness (excluding Mount Barker): and
  • Be undertaking the placement in a location more than 90 minutes travel time from both the student’s semester and permanent home address; and
  • Have not received financial support or a Scholarship from Flinders University for a rural/remote placement in the same year.

*Scholarships are available to part-time students in exceptional circumstances, which include (but are not limited to) disability, illness or carer responsibilities.

^ In order to meet the eligibility criteria, students undertaking an elective placement will need to provide confirmation from their host supervisor that the placement will provide a significant benefit to their education.

Recipients who do not proceed with the placement may be liable to repay the Scholarship.

Interview date, Process and Venue for The Bob Dunstone Rural Placement Scholarship

The Scholarship selection will be conducted by a panel of staff with experience in Work Integrated Learning.  When ranking applications, the panel will consider the:

  • Distance travelled and remoteness of the placement location; and
  • Length of the placement; and
  • Financial hardship caused by the placement as demonstrated by the applicant in their financial hardship statement; and
  • Level of previously received funding or accommodation support for placements in previous years; and
  • Number of placements the applicant is required to undertake for their course; and
  • Educational and professional development benefits to the applicant of undertaking a regional placement as demonstrated in their educational benefits statement.
