Flinders University Combined PhD & FRACP Accredited Sleep Medicine Advanced Training Position 2024

We are seeking an outstanding Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Trainee/Physician candidate for a PhD scholarship for a NHMRC MRFF Optimising Screening, Diagnosis and Management of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Stream 2 Targeted Grant entitled: Study to Investigate the Management of Patients using LImited-channel testing versus Full polysomnography for Identification of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (SIMPLIFI-OSA). This exciting project is a partnership between Flinders University and the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network in South Australia, as well as Monash Health, Eastern Health, Austin Health (Victoria) and Royal North Shore (NSW).

The project has one funded PhD scholarship. The successful candidate will be based at Flinders University and SALHN (Principal Supervisor Associate Professor Ching Li Chai-Coetzer).

Aim and Benefits of Combined PhD & FRACP-accredited Sleep Medicine Advanced Training Position

The scholarship includes:

  • A stipend valued at $50,000 per annum tax free (or $25,000 per annum part-time)
  • The scholarship will be awarded for 3 years full-time, or 6 years part-time
  • A Research Training Program Fee Offset Scholarship to cover tuition fees for Australian Citizens, NZ Citizens and Permanent Residents.
  • Consideration for combined, part-time FRACP-accredited Sleep Medicine Advanced Training at Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN) during their PhD studies (which will be administered separately via SALHN).

Requirements for Combined PhD & FRACP-accredited Sleep Medicine Advanced Training Position Qualification

To be eligible for the award of this scholarship a student must:

  • Be an Australian citizen; or New Zealand citizen; or have been granted permanent resident status; and
  • Meet PhD admission requirements including: have an Australian Honours degree Class 1 or 2A or equivalent qualification (at least AQF Level 8), including a research component of at least 6 months’ full-time study achieving Distinction (75%) OR including evidence of equivalent research experience, such as a substantial first-author refereed publication or track record as an investigator on a competitive grant; and
  • Be available to commence as a PhD student at Flinders University in semester 1, 2025;
  • Have completed a Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent with full registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Medical Officer; successful completion of the RACP Divisional Clinical Exam; have completed at least 2 core years of FRACP-accredited Respiratory Medicine Advanced Training at the time of commencement of the position and intend on completing (or have already completed) FRACP Sleep Medicine Advanced Training, and be eligible for registration as an FRACP Advanced Trainee in Sleep Medicine.

Those who apply for the scholarship opportunity that have not already applied for admission to a relevant HDR must also apply.  

By lodging this separate application, applicants acknowledge:

  • The ‘Supervisor confirmation’ must refer to the application for this scholarship
  • The application for PhD admission will only be assessed where:

o   The applicant is successful in being awarded the scholarship

OR

o   The applicant confirms in the application for PhD admission that, if they are not successful in being awarded the scholarship, their supervisors agree that the project and enrolment can still proceed and the applicant agrees to this.

All other applications for PhD admission lodged in line with this scholarship opportunity will be not be assessed and will be withdrawn.
