Fully funded Stuart Hall Foundation–CHASE AHRC studentships for BAME researchers in the Arts and Humanities 2025

The University of Kent is proud to be part of the Consortium for the Humanities and the Arts South-East England (CHASE), one of only 8 UK AHRC-funded Doctoral Training Partnerships in the scheme, offering AHRC studentships that include the opportunity for extended skills training and collaborative placements. Our partners include Goldsmiths, The Courtauld Institute of Art, SOAS and Birkbeck, all part of the University of London, and the Universities of East Anglia, Essex, and Sussex. CHASE will offer students a wide range of exciting opportunities to gain professional experience, work across institutions and disciplines, and acquire advanced research skills. The University of Kent will offer CHASE Studentships in 2025/26 in many Arts and Humanities disciplines, as well as in Human and Social Sciences, and Law, Society and Social Justice.

Aim and Benefits of University of Kent Stuart Hall Foundation–CHASE AHRC studentships for BAME researchers in the Arts and Humanities

These scholarships include a doctoral stipend (equivalent to the Research Councils UK National Minimum Doctoral Stipend, to be announced –previous 2024/25 rate is £19,237.) Tuition fees at the home rate and access to further research funding.

CHASE studentships also provide access to a wide range of training and placement opportunities.

Eligibility

The Stuart Hall Foundation Scholarships are available to Home candidates from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, specifically encouraging applicants with an interest in the work and legacy of Stuart Hall.

Your PhD project must fit with the aims of the Foundation. The Foundation works collaboratively to forge creative partnerships in the spirit of Stuart Hall; thinking together and working towards a racially just and more equal future. The Stuart Hall Foundation is committed to providing opportunities for students and academics, pursuing themes resonant with the work of Professor Stuart Hall and that of the Foundation.

Interview date, Process and Venue for University of Kent Stuart Hall Foundation–CHASE AHRC studentships for BAME researchers in the Arts and Humanities

CHASE Studentship Selection Criteria for 2025/26 is based on the following:

Research Proposal

  • The proposal is clearly written and demonstrates engagement with an academic field at a high level of sophistication.
  • The project demonstrates original thinking in its field.
  • The methodology proposed clearly demonstrates the viability of the planned research.
  • The planned research is described in a way that inspires confidence that it will definitely be completed within three years.

Preparedness for Research

  • The applicant demonstrates understanding of appropriate research skills required for successful completion of the project
  • The applicant has appropriate training at Master's level or equivalent to undertake the project
  • The applicant’s references fully support the applicant’s preparedness for doctoral study

Suitability of Research Environment

  • The research environment (as constituted by the proposed supervision, the home department(s) or equivalent, the institutional support (including available archives, sources, research centres), any external organisations) is appropriate to the project
  • The applicant has given clear thought to the fit between their project and their proposed research environment
  • The supervisor statement fully supports the project's fit with the proposed research environment.

To be considered for a CHASE studentship at Kent you must follow the below steps carefully. You will only be considered for a studentship if you complete each step by the Kent deadline of Monday 2 December 2024 at 23:59 GMT.

Step 1: Apply for a PhD at Kent through one of the eligible disciplines. Consult with a primary supervisor when applying. If you have already applied to Kent and hold a deferred offer or are a current PhD student at Kent and will have more than 50% of your registration remaining in October 2025, move to step 2.

Step 2: Visit our CHASE webpage to download the Kent/CHASE Application Form, please complete the form with the support of your potential primary supervisor.

Step 3: Submit the Kent/CHASE Application Form to the Graduate and Researcher College by emailing [email protected] by the deadline. You MUST complete this step to be considered for a CHASE studentship at Kent. Please enclose the following information in your email submission:

  • Kent/CHASE Application Form
  • Full Name
  • KentVision applicant/student ID number
  • Preferred email address
