Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) 2023 Call for Stories on Locally Led Adaptation

The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) and CDKN are pleased to announce a call for stories on community-driven and Locally Led Adaptation (LLA). These stories will be collaboratively developed and featured in a publication to be launched at COP28.

To respond to climate change and development challenges in an inclusive, sustainable and effective way, a variety of actors and voices need to come together and collaborate. Importantly, planning, designing, implementing and monitoring local interventions need to be led by communities and organisations on the ground that are equipped with their knowledge, experience, networks and varied strengths. Learning from local approaches and adaptation interventions is crucial to further promote LLA.

Through this call, GCA and CDKN are looking to identify and collaboratively develop a number of stories that highlight different lessons emerging from community-driven and LLA interventions with local partners working in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The stories will form part of a publication that will be launched at COP28 and will follow on from the Stories of Resilience - Lessons from Local Adaptation Practice, which was produced by the GCA in 2022.

About Global Center on Adaptation (GCA)

The Global Center on Adaptation advances bold actions that help societies across the world become more resilient to climate-related threats. They act as a solutions broker, bringing together governments, the private sector, civil society, intergovernmental bodies, and knowledge institutions that can address the obstacles slowing down adaptation action. The Center builds on, improves, and accelerates breakthrough solutions that catalyze transformation at scale and at speed... read more... continue reading

Aim and Benefits of GCA Call for Stories on Locally Led Adaptation

We are looking to identify cases from community-based, local non-governmental organisations or local governments that have recognised, prioritised and mobilised the capacity and knowledge held by local actors to design and deliver local adaptation interventions. While the work of GCA and CDKN focuses on climate resilience and action, the stories could focus on lessons from other sectors too (for instance, related to processes that enable and empower local leadership, or focus on a climate-vulnerable development sector such as health) to highlight learning that we could apply to the climate change adaptation field. The stories could highlight successful examples but could also show cases where certain strategies or approaches were tried, but did not succeed, providing rich lessons for others.

Requirements for GCA Call for Stories on Locally Led Adaptation Qualification

We would love to hear from you if you think you have a potential story to share. We expect to include approximately ten stories 1 (of up to about 6,000 words each), which are rich in detail and depth, particularly focusing on the ways in which (i.e. through specific processes, approaches and strategies) particular outcomes were achieved. We intend following this process:

1. To start with, we would like to get to know you and your story idea through this simple google form, as soon as possible (see timing below).

2. If your story fits, we will be in touch to organise up to three online interviews in which we hope to agree on the elements of the story together. Our team has the capacity to conduct interviews in English, Spanish, French or Bahasa Indonesia. The interviews are expected to take place in the months of June and July. We will be asking you for additional supplementary material to help us best understand your story context and issues (e.g. project documents, reports, articles), as well as high resolution photographs  (with an indication of who to credit) to accompany the written text. We may also ask for the contact details of any other stakeholder you think could be helpful in supplementing the story.

3. We will write the draft story in English and share it with you for corrections and/or additions by September. You will be recognised as a co-author in the story, and we will ask you to provide us with your organisation’s logo (if relevant) to be included in the publication.

4. The stories will be analysed for common themes (e.g. tied to the issues listed in the bullet points above) and form part of a publication that will enhance decision-makers’ and practitioners’ practical understanding of locally-led action as an approach to achieve inclusive, sustainable and equitable climate resilience.

5. The publication will be accompanied by two videos. We will reach out to you through a separate interview to contribute to the videos in the month of August.

At this stage, we will also ask for high resolution photographs and video material that can be used in the publication and dissemination material.

Interview date, Process and Venue for GCA Call for Stories on Locally Led Adaptation

We are eager to have case studies as soon as possible, but the final deadline for Google form submissions is 12 June 2023. When selecting case studies, we will be looking for good practices that can inform adaptation processes in different contexts, and strength of evidence of locally-led adaptation/action, as well as the geographic spread of case studies.

Story contributors will be compensated for their time and will be paid once they provide comments and approval on the story draft and submit required video and photo material. We also hope that this process is the beginning of a longer-term relationship with story contributors, which could include peer learning opportunities with other chapter contributors and showcasing of the different voices in various platforms.

Application Deadline
