UiO:Energy and Environment offers financial support for international mobility and collaboration within the field of sustainable energy, climate and environment.
UiO:Energy and Environment aims to promote career enhancing activities and international collaboration, exchange, and visibility. The call for mobility funding and partnerships is one of the initiatives supporting these objectives. UiO: Energy and Environment has defined four main research areas across the university and the funding for the activities for which funding is applied for should be thematically placed under one or more of these.

Amount and limit
- You may apply for up to NOK 50,000.
- If you are granted a smaller amount, you may reapply. The total sum of all granted funds to the same person cannot exceed NOK 50,000.
Which activities are supported
- Support can be granted for short-term stays abroad, typically 2–8 weeks, although shorter stays may also be considered. Examples: conferences, courses, summer schools, fieldwork, visiting stays with international partners.
- For support to attend conferences you must contribute a poster, paper or presentation, and this must be documented.
- Applications for longer visits may be considered, but full funding should not be expected. For guest stays of 3–12 months we point applicants to other funding sources and encourage applying to them (for example, the Research Council of Norway or Erasmus+)
- It is possible to receive funding to attend international conferences in Norway. Funding is not provided for other types of activities in Norway (e.g. courses).
- Short visiting stays for international researchers can be approved to establish or strengthen long-term and strategic collaboration with research environments at UiO. Such applications must always be submitted by a researcher at UiO.
What can the funds cover and what do they not cover?
- The funds may cover accommodation, transportation (train, plane, bus, boat), course and conference fees, and application fees. Please note that you are required to find the cheapest transportation and accommodation available.
- Berg-Hansen should as a rule be used when booking business trips and other travel for which UiO covers the costs. If Berg-Hansen cannot offer accommodation, or cannot do so within an acceptable cost framework, other providers may be used. Airbnb must not be used, as it is not in line with UiO’s ethical guidelines for procurement. For longer stays we recommend accommodation arranged by the host institution or local providers with which the host has agreements.
- The funds do not cover equipment (e.g., PC, audio recorder, mobile phone, adapter, tripod, clothing).
- Most stays do not entitle the recipient to per diem (subsistence allowance), since this is a stipend. Per diem can only be claimed for conferences if meals are not covered by the travel operator, hotel, or conference.

- Master’s students, PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, researchers and academic staff at UiO.
- UiO:Energy and Environment gives priority to master students, PhDs and Postdocs. Permanent academic staff may still apply for funding for strategically important travel (for example, grant writing or collaboration).

Award decision
- Awards are decided by the Director of UiO: Energy and Environment.
- We prioritize master students, PhDs and Postdocs, activities that strengthen career development, and activities that promote UiO’s participation in Horizon Europe.
Response time
- You will receive a reply to your application within six weeks.
After award
- The trip must be carried out in accordance with UiO’s guidelines.
- Costs are settled via travel expense claims and reimbursement requests in the DFØ app.
- Because this is a stipend, the special agreement for compensation supplements abroad does not apply.
- More detailed information and any conditions will be provided in the award letter.
Documents Required for Application
- The application must be submitted before the trip takes place.
- The stay must take place within 12 months from the date of application.
Formal attachments and information
- State the location and host institution as well as planned dates and duration.
- Attach documentation from the host institution confirming that you have been invited or accepted.
- Budget: attach an estimated budget for travel, accommodation and any course fees.
- Activity and relevance: explain which activities you will participate in or carry out, and why the stay will advance your research and/or skills.
- Academic relevance: describe why the activity is relevant to research or education in sustainable energy, climate and environment.
- For applications for conference support: attach confirmation of an accepted contribution (for example, an accepted abstract, paper or invitation to present).
Internal approval
- The application must be approved by the applicant’s immediate supervisor in the unit, or by the administrative manager.
