Lithuanian Centre For Social Sciences PhD Scholarship 2026

Applicants to doctoral studies in Sociology science field are admitted through an open competition according to the chosen dissertation topic separately to each doctoral institution that has been granted the joint right of doctoral studies. Applicants can apply to no more than two different dissertation topics. The competition is organized by the Doctoral School of Vytautas Magnus University, the competition is conducted by the Doctoral Committee of Sociology Science Field (hereinafter – Committee).

• Master’s degree or higher education degree equal to it.
• Scientific research experience, participation in research.
• Proficiency in English (B2–C2 level).

• Scientific publications (SP).
  Applicant’s scientific publications are evaluated on a points basis. Points for scientific publications are awarded according to the attached table and converted into a ten-point grading system. Scientific activity is also evaluated on a points basis.
• Scientific research project (RP).
  The scientific research project is prepared according to the requirements set by Committee (Annex 2). The project is marked by two evaluators appointed by Committee. Its final mark consists of the average of marks given by the two evaluators in a ten-point grading system. Only those applicants whose final score for the research project is not less than 6 points can apply for doctoral studies.
• Grade point average (GPA)
  of the marks of study courses and thesis in annex/supplement to Master’s diploma or other diploma confirming the reward of corresponding qualification.
• Motivational interview (MI).
  During the motivational interview the applicant’s preparation and motivation to study in the doctoral programme is assessed as well as the adequacy of scientific publications, scientific research and other activity to the chosen topic, recommendations of scientists, etc. During the motivation interview, an additional mark may be awarded for scientific research project’s compliance with doctoral institutions’ research areas approved by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania and long-term institutional research and development programmes. The final mark* of the motivational interview is generated by the average of Committee member marks in a tenpoint grading system. Only applicants whose final score for the motivation interview is not lower than 5 are eligible to apply for doctoral studies.

Documents Required for Application

• Application for admission addressed to the Rector
• Diploma of Master’s degree or qualification adequate to it, its annex/supplement
• Two recommendations from scholars in the field of sociology (issued within the past year). At least one recommendation must be provided by a Lithuanian scholar.
• Curriculum Vitae (signed by applicant)
• List of applicant’s scientific publications (submitted in full biobliographic description) and their copies (submitted together with a copy of journal’s cover and contents page); or, if a scientific article in not yet published – a document issued by the editorial board of a scientific journal certifying the acceptance of an article for publication (after the reviewing procedure) and its manuscript. If the publication is written in a language other than English or Lithuanian, a summary of the publication in English must be provided.
• Documents certifying English language proficiency (certificates, attestations, diplomas, and other relevant documents). Applicants from non-EU countries must provide proof of English proficiency at a level not lower than B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, an IELTS score of 6.5, or an equivalent international English language examination.
• Electronic copy of the scientific research project in .doc or .docx format, if two topics are indicated in the application, then 2 scientific research projects need to be submitted
• Personal identification document
• Documents notifying the change of surname if not all documents are submitted under the same surname
• Other documents which an applicant wishes to submit
• All required documents must be submitted by the specified deadline. Applicants who fail to submit all mandatory documents will not be considered for the competition.
