Loughborough University Sanctuary PhD Scholarships 2026/2027

Loughborough University is delighted to present the Loughborough University Sanctuary PhD Scholarships for entry in October 2026, February 2027 or July 2027.

The Sanctuary Scholarship scheme at Loughborough University exists to enable access to advanced study for individuals whose education and life chances have been disrupted by conflict, persecution, or displacement, and who cannot reasonably access higher education without targeted institutional support.

Aim and Benefits of Loughborough University Sanctuary PhD Scholarships PhD Scholarship

• The scholarship will cover 100% of the tuition fees plus a stipend set at the recommended UKRI rate of £21,805 per annum for a period of 3 years for full-time PhD study subject to annual uplifts.
• Scholarships for those wishing to study part-time in the UK will also be considered*.
• Students will be expected to fund their travel and visa costs (where required) through other sources. 

The scholarships are funded through university funds.

Requirements for Loughborough University Sanctuary PhD Scholarships PhD Scholarship Qualification

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

• Currently hold an offer of study (conditional or unconditional) for a postgraduate research (PhD) programme at Loughborough University.
• Show evidence of exceptional academic achievement relative to opportunity and disruption
• Are considered an ‘at-risk scholar’

It is difficult to provide a definitive definition for an ‘at-risk scholar’, but the University works to a framework which asks:

• Is your home located in a region of conflict/war such that your life or the lives of your family are in danger, or such that you could be forcibly displaced due to persecution?
• Are you, or your family, at risk of imminent imprisonment, injury, death or persecution?
• If you are currently in the UK but were to return to your home country, your life or safety would be at much greater risk.

• Applications will be initially shortlisted and the final decision on the awards will be made by a selection panel at the University.

How to Apply

• The scholarship application procedure is an open competition.
• Applicants may only apply for the scholarship after an offer for a place in one of Loughborough University’s PhD programmes has been made.
• Applicants in possession of an offer from Loughborough (conditional or unconditional) can apply for the scholarship using the link to the online application form above.

Note:

• Scholarship applications will not be considered unless the applicant is holding an offer from Loughborough at the time of submission (this offer may be conditional or unconditional).
• Please do not submit your scholarship application until you have received your offer letter. Applications will only be considered if all parts of the form are completed in full.
