Macquarie University Generating Synthetic Medical Data via AI Models PhD Scholarship 2026

This scholarship is designed to support HDR students in advancing research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and health. This scholarship supports research on AI tools for generating synthetic multi-modal medical data, which can benefit patients and hospitals with privacy, and insurance providers and public health departments for medical study. This scholarship funds research using advanced AI, including diffusion models and GANs, to generate high-quality synthetic medical data. The goal is to create privacy-preserving, artificial patient records that mimic real clinical data from sources like MIMIC-IV. This will provide a secure resource for medical research and development, overcoming data privacy and accessibility barriers. The student will develop and validate novel generative models, ensuring the synthetic data is both clinically useful and provably private.

Research aims

• Develop multi-modal models to generate coherent synthetic data (eg clinical text with matching lab results)
• Integrate privacy guarantees like differential privacy into the generation process
• Create new metrics to evaluate the clinical utility and realism of the synthetic data for tasks like training diagnostic AI.

Aim and Benefits of Macquarie University Postgraduate Scholarship

The scholarship comprises:

• a tuition fee offset/scholarship
• a living allowance stipend.

The value of each stipend scholarship is $39,700 per annum (full time, indexed).

Requirements for Macquarie University Postgraduate Scholarship Qualification

This scholarship is available to eligible candidates, who have obtained a coursework masters degree, to undertake a one-year MRes program.
