The modern world offers unparalleled tools for connection, from social media to the wealth of information accessible from across the globe. Yet, while these advancements have made us more virtually connected than ever, they have also in many ways deepened the divides between us. The spread of misinformation, negative impacts on mental wellbeing, and the transient nature of modern life have all contributed to a growing sense of disconnection and division. It comes as no surprise, then, that recent studies show a decline in people’s perception of the world as a welcoming and convivial place (1).
This growing sense of isolation has far-reaching consequences. The recent WHO Commission on Social Connection has estimated that 1 in 4 older adults are facing social isolation and up to 15% of adolescents worldwide are experiencing loneliness worldwide (2).
