Postgraduate Research Scholarship in Human-Computer Interaction Focused on Context-aware Autonomous Vehicle–pedestrian Interactions 2027

This Scholarship has been established to provide financial assistance to research students to join a project focused on developing a rapid design toolkit for context-aware external human-machine interfaces (eHMIs) — the communication systems autonomous vehicles use to signal intent to pedestrians in complex urban environments. The PhD project will investigate context-aware AV–pedestrian interactions using technologies such as haptic feedback, spatial audio, and mixed reality. Ultimately producing new knowledge for safe and inclusive eHMIs for future autonomous vehicles.

The scholarship is co-funded by an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) (DE260101386) and the School of Architecture, Design and Planning.

Aim and Benefits of Postgraduate Research Scholarship in Human-Computer Interaction focused on context-aware autonomous vehicle–pedestrian interactions Postgraduate Scholarship

• The Scholarship will provide a stipend allowance equivalent to the University of Sydney Research Training Program (RTP) annual stipend rate (indexed on the 1 January each year) for up to 12 research periods.

Requirements for Postgraduate Research Scholarship in Human-Computer Interaction focused on context-aware autonomous vehicle–pedestrian interactions Postgraduate Scholarship Qualification

You must be:

• Domestic/international student
• currently enrolled full-time in a PhD within the School of Architecture, Design and Planning
• research on Context-Aware External Human-Machine Interfaces
• conduct research under the supervision of Dr Callum Parker
• an Honours degree (first class) or equivalent, or a master’s degree in human-Computer Interaction (HCI) or Interaction Design.
