This project investigates how 21st-century media changes and challenges the social role of media by gathering detailed evidence about how Australians use media (all forms, old and new). The media available to and used by Australians are now radically different from when core theories about the role of media in society were established. We are awash in data about clicks, views, and likes, but we lack evidence about what people now do with media, how they select among many options, and what they value to understanding the roles of media in the twenty-first century.
