RWTH Aachen University 2025 NRWege ins Studium – Scholarships for Refugees

As part of the DAAD program “NRWege ins Studium – Unterstützung von Studierenden mit Fluchterfahrung an Hochschulen in Nordrhein-Westfallen ab 2023”, the International Office can award scholarships for students with refugee experience. The program is funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Aim and Benefits of NRWege ins Studium – Scholarships for Refugees

Scholarship recipients will be awarded short-term scholarships up to a maximum of six months, worth up to 992 Euros per month. The duration of the scholarship and the stipend paid to the recipient depend on the number and financial situation of the selected candidates.


Requirements for NRWege ins Studium – Scholarships for Refugees Qualification

Eligible to apply for the scholarships are RWTH students who:

  • Have refugee status in Germany
  • Have acquired their university entrance qualification abroad (so-called Bildungsinländer, i.e. non-German citizens who have a German school leaving certificate or university degree, are not eligible)
  • Are enrolled at the RWTH or have been admitted as students at RWTH for the 2025 summer semester.
  • Are located in Germany.
  • Have already submitted a BAFöG (state funding for students) application to Studierendenwerk and are still waiting for the decision or have received a rejection letter from Studierendenwerk.
  • Are in a financial emergency situation and can prove that they cannot finance their studies in any other way.
    are willing to participate in the counseling services offered by RWTH's Arbitration Board for academic refugees in order to ensure successful studies.
  • Are willing to provide the necessary personal data to the University as part of the funding program and to participate in surveys and studies for the evaluation of the "NRWege ins Studium" program.

Interview date, Process and Venue for NRWege ins Studium – Scholarships for Refugees

Scholarship holders are selected by a commission, based on various criteria such as academic performance and financial need. There is no entitlement to a scholarship.

The selection will take place in the first week of June 2025. Scholarship recipients will be informed in writing of the outcome of the selection process. Please note that we need your current BAföG notification for the selection process, as BAföG has priority over the NRWege scholarship. If you are waiting for feedback from Studierendenwerk concerning your BAföG request at the time of application, the decision on your application can only be made after you have submitted your BAföG notification to us.


Documents Required for Application

  1. Application form, including a description of your financial situation. Please submit relevant copies as evidence of your financial situation.
  2. Curriculum vitae in table form
  3. Letter of motivation (one page max): Please explain in detail why you need support from the scholarship program and why you cannot finance your studies on your own. Please also explain how you want to achieve good academic results with the help of the scholarship.
  4. Copy of your residence permit (both sides)
  5. Evidence that you possess a university entrance qualification
  6. Current certificate of enrollment
  7. Bank statements for the last four weeks
  8. If you receive government benefits or scholarships, please provide copies of the respective certificates.
  9. If applicable: copy of employment contracts.
  10. Your application for BAFöG (state benefits for students) and, if applicable, the letter of rejection.
  11. For students from the 2nd semester onwards: evidence of your academic achievements so far (RWTHonline transcript of records)
  12. Expert opinion of your academic advisor / information on the course of studies and academic achievements: this applies to students who received an NRWege scholarship in the past and those who are applying for the first time for the 2025 summer semester and are in the second semester of study or a higher semester.
  13. Your unsworn declaration
  14. Self-declaration of income


Application Deadline

May 15, 2025

How to Apply

The application, including all relevant documents, must be submitted by May 15, 2025. Scholarship recipients will be selected in the first week of June. The first scholarship installment will be paid at the beginning of July 2025.
