Simmons University is a private women-focused undergraduate university and co-educational graduate school in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. It was established in 1899 by clothing manufacturer John Simmons. In 2018, it reorganized its structure and changed its name to a university.

Aim and Benefits of Simmons University Boston Scholarship

We are deeply committed to Boston

As an institution deeply committed to the city of Boston, Simmons University strives to provide opportunities for local high school students to achieve success at the college level and beyond.

The Boston Scholarship is a four-year, full-tuition scholarship. Once at Simmons, recipients must maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and recommended to live on campus.

Requirements for Simmons University Boston Scholarship Qualification

Students who meet the following criteria are invited to apply for the scholarship:

  • Currently attend a Boston public high school or Boston charter school
  • Have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (re-calculated)
  • Simmons is test optional so it is your choice if you would like to submit standardized test scores with your admission application. For those choosing to submit test scores, a 21 or higher is recommended on the ACT and a 1080 or higher is recommended on the SAT
  • Have demonstrated creativity, engagement, global perspective, leadership, resiliency, or other qualities indicative of the ability to contribute to Simmons' diverse community

Interview date, Process and Venue for Simmons University Boston Scholarship

Part I: Nomination Letter (optional)

A student's nomination letter should come from a guidance counselor, college counselor, community advocate, headmaster, or teacher. Students may also choose to nominate themselves. On each page of the nomination letter, students should include their full name and date of birth. Nominators must include their full name, title, e-mail address, phone number, and mailing address within the letter.

The letter should include the following:

  • Reason why the nominator feels the student should receive this scholarship
  • Highlight and assess the student’s work in the community
  • An assessment of the student’s promise at Simmons University
  • Any additional information that the nominator would like the committee to know in considering the student

Part II: Essay

The application consists of an essay in response to the prompt below. Students should submit their essays in PDF or Word Doc via email with the subject line "Boston Scholarship Application," by January 10. Each page of the document should include the student's full name and date of birth.

Please note: it is the student's responsibility to submit a working file in the proper format (PDF or Word) as we will not convert or accept incompatible files (i.e. Google Docs, Pages, etc.)

Essay prompt

  • Essay (of no more than 500 words): Is a good education a right or a privilege? Why do you think so? Use specific reasons and examples to explain your answer.

Part III: On-Campus Interview

Interview: Finalists will be invited via email to schedule an interview. We encourage students to schedule an on-campus interview, but there will also be an option to do them virtually. Interview days are typically held during February break. Finalists will receive a confirmation email with their interview date and time after scheduling.

In order to be considered for this scholarship, applicants must submit their admission application along with their Boston Scholarship application by January 10.

The application process consists of three parts: a nomination letter, an essay, and an on-campus interview. To apply for the scholarship please email all required materials with the subject line "Boston Scholarship Application."

Students should also complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), if applicable, by February 1. The federal school code for Simmons is 002208
