The Africa Institute, Global Studies University is a globally oriented center for research, documentation, study, and teaching of Africa and its diaspora in the humanities and social sciences. It hosts a series of senior and post-doctoral fellowships, awarded through its Research Fellowships Program.
Conceived as a research-based think-tank and a postgraduate studies institution, the Institute offers both masters and Ph.D. programs dedicated to training a new generation of critical thinkers in African and African diaspora studies and evolving a new model for academic research, teaching and documentation in the field.

Requirements for Africa Institute Senior and Postdoctoral Fellowships Program Fellowship Qualification
- The Senior Fellowships are open to scholars who are at the associate professor or full professor levels, or their equivalents within or outside the academy.
- The applicant for the Postdoctoral Fellowships must hold a Ph.D. awarded within the last five years.
Interview date, Process and Venue for Africa Institute Senior and Postdoctoral Fellowships Program Fellowship
- Open Call Launch: July 6, 2026
- Application Deadline: September 30, 2026
- Review and Shortlisting: October 2026
- Interviews: Mid-November 2026
- Offer Notifications: By mid-December 2026
- Arrival in Sharjah: Mid-August 2027
- Program Start: September 2027
The timeline outlined above is indicative and subject to change at the discretion of The Africa Institute, GSU.
Fellowship Duration
- Senior Fellowship: One-year residency (September 2027 – June 2028)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship: Two-year residency (September 2027 – June 2029)
All fellows are expected to arrive in mid-August 2027 to finalize residency and housing arrangements prior to the start of the program.
Documents Required for Application
- An abstract (up to 300 words) outlining the research project the applicant proposes to carry out during the fellowship period.
- A project statement (1,000–2,000 words) outlining the research objectives, approach, and overall importance of the study. Applicants may also include a one-page bibliography featuring the key sources that are most relevant to their proposed work.
- Two Samples of Writing (published and/or unpublished)
- Letter of Interest
- CV
- Contact details of three referees whom the Institute will solicit directly for letters of reference.

- Applicants may log in to the portal at any time to monitor the status of their application throughout the review process.
- Applications submitted via email will not be considered.
- All required materials must be uploaded to the portal. Individual file sizes must not exceed 3 MB.
- Kindly note that the faculty of Global Studies University will review all applications. Recipients will be selected based on the quality of the proposal and the applicant’s demonstrated capacity to complete the project.
