UniSQ 2026 HDR Scholarship: AI for Early Detection of Neurodegenerative Disorder in Elderly

This project aims to develop outcome measures for early detection of neurodegenerative disorders using artificial intelligence (AI) and various sensing modalities, offering personalised support to older adults. The expected outcome is the creation of AI algorithms to detect early signs of neurodegenerative disorders in older adults living independently at home. The potential benefit is early detection of neurodegenerative disorders in older adults, improving quality of life and effective disease management.

HDR Scholarship

Aim and Benefits of HDR Scholarship

• A stipend valued at $48,071 for a student commencing in 2026. 
• A Project Expense and Development Package valued at $13,000.
• Maximum period of tenure of an award is 4 years. Periods of study already undertaken towards the degree will be deducted from the period of tenure

Requirements for HDR Scholarship Qualification

To be eligible applicants must:
• have completed an Honours Degree with First Class or 2A Honours, or equivalent level, or a Master's degree with a significant research component;  
• have applied, or currently enrolled in the  at UniSQ;
• not be receiving equivalent support providing a benefit greater than 75% of the student’s stipend rate;
• be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or Australian permanent resident
• meet university PhD admission and English language requirements
• not have previously completed a PhD
• not be in receipt of another primary scholarship
• be able to commence the program in the year of the offer
• enrol as a full-time PhD student. The Program is not designed for part-time arrangements and are strongly discouraged. However, part-time may potentially be considered only if approved by the supervisory team and in accordance with university policy. Part-time scholarships are taxable.
• be located at the agreed project location(s) and, if required, comply with the university’s external enrolment procedures.

Interview date, Process and Venue for HDR Scholarship

• Demonstrated experience in programming and system development.   
• Expertise in Python programming and data analysis.   
• Experience developing Machine Learning models. TensorFlow or PyTorch is desirable.
