Since 2007, the Weston Family Awards in Northern Research have provided unparalleled support to early-career scientists in Canada pursuing research in Canada’s North. Funded by the Weston Family Foundation, these annual awards are some of the most prestigious in the country for students pursuing a master’s degree, a doctoral degree or postdoctoral fellowship. Nearly 300 students have been selected to receive an award since the program’s inception, forming a community of Weston Family Northern Scientists who are at the forefront of northern scholarship and who are helping shape a better future for Canada and the world.

Each award is valued at $15,000 over one (1) year.
Applicants to the master’s level of the awards program must:
• Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada as of the application deadline;
• Be enrolled in a master’s program (leading to a thesis) in the natural sciences pursuing northern research at an accredited Canadian university as of the application deadline;
• Have received approval for their research proposal, including any required ethical reviews and/or research licenses, by the time they start their award.

In the 2023-2024 program year, the Weston Family Foundation will aim to support up to ten (10) awards for students at the doctoral level.
Each award is valued at $50,000 over two (2) years.
Eligibility Applicants to the doctoral level of the awards program must:
• Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada as of the application deadline
• Be enrolled in a doctoral program (leading to a thesis) in the natural sciences pursuing northern research at an accredited Canadian university as of the application deadline
• Have received approval for their research proposal, including any required ethical reviews and/or research licenses, by the time they start their award.
Please note that past recipients of the Weston Family Awards in Northern Research at the master’s level are eligible to apply for an award at the doctoral level.
Successful applicants at the doctoral level will also be considered for additional funding through the Extended Stay program (see details in the “How to Apply” section).
The tenure period for awards at the doctoral level begins June 1, 2023, and ends May 31, 2025.

In the 2023-2024 program year, the Weston Family Foundation will aim to support up to four (4) awards for students at the postdoctoral level.
Each award is valued at $100,000 over two (2) years, with funding in the second-year contingent upon acceptable progress in the proposed area of research in the first year.
Applicants to the postdoctoral level of the awards program must:
• Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada as of the application deadline
• Be approved to start a postdoctoral fellowship at a Canadian university or eligible Canadian research institute under the supervision of a faculty member or research scientist as of the application deadline
• Be pursuing research in the natural sciences with a focus on Canada’s North
• Have received approval for their research proposal, including any required ethical reviews and/or research licenses, by the time they start their award and
• Complete all requirements for a doctoral degree by June 1, 2023, or have completed their doctoral degree no more than two years before the date of the application deadline (this period may be extended to three years if the Applicant acquired at least six months of work experience in government or industry after they received.
Successful applicants at the postdoctoral level will also be provided with up to $10,000 in additional funding per year to support travel related to carrying out fieldwork, shipping research equipment and materials to field sites, and attending conferences and scientific meetings.
The tenure period for awards at the postdoctoral level begins June 1, 2023, and ends May 31, 2024/25.
