University of Bayreuth 2021 Science & Technology Studies of the Global South (Junior Professorship) for Developing Countries

The Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences at the University of Bayreuth is currently seeking to appoint a Junior Professor (pay grade: W1) of Science & Technology Studies of the Global South.

Teaching will be carried out within the context of the African Studies-related bachelor’s and master’s programmes as well as in BIGSAS (the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies). The professorship also involves teaching in the master’s programmes M.Sc. Environmental and Resource Technology (Faculty VI) and M.Sc. Global Food, Nutrition & Health (Faculty VII). Active engagement with the University of Bayreuth’s focus on African Studies is required, as well as participation in inter- and transdisciplinary collaborative research. In particular, the candidate is expected to advance the research agenda of the Cluster of Excellence “Africa Multiple”. The ability to teach in English is expected.

In addition to the standard requirements, prerequisites for this position are a university degree, proven excellence in teaching, and the ability to carry out scholarly research (usually demonstrated by the quality of the applicant’s doctoral research). If the candidate was employed as a graduate assistant or research associate prior to or subsequent to earning his or her doctorate, the total duration of the doctoral research phase and the employment phase should not exceed six years. The requirements given in §7 of the university’s “Bayreuth Track” regulations also apply.

The successful candidate will initially be hired as a fixed-term civil servant for a period of three years and the contract will be extended for an additional three years upon successful evaluation in the third year of employment. The teaching load is currently set at 5 hours of instruction in the first phase and 7 hours of instruction in the second phase.

An agreement defining the criteria for third-year and tenure reviews will be drawn up by the university and the applicant during the appointment negotiations. The agreement will include criteria in the categories of Research and Academic Teaching and may also include Third Mission and Academic Engagement. The appointment to the W3 professorship depends exclusively on the outcome of the tenure evaluation. After successful tenure evaluation, the candidate is appointed University Professor (W 3) as a permanent civil servant. Further information on the Bayreuth Track process can be found under https://www.uni-bayreuth.de/en/university/work-at-the-university/appointment-process/index.html).

Female scholars and any persons who can help make the research and teaching profile of the university more diverse are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants with children are highly welcome
