University of Melbourne Elma Cole Equine Research Scholarship 2026

The Elma Cole Equine Research Scholarship was established with a gift from Elma Stuart Rees Cole and is offered to graduate researchers who are enrolled in the Doctor of Philosophy – Science, are undertaking research in the field of equine health, and are experiencing financial need. Preference is given to graduate researchers undertaking research into the treatment of illnesses and injuries from which racehorses and quarter horses are prone to suffer.

University of Melbourne Postgraduate Scholarship

Aim and Benefits of University of Melbourne Postgraduate Scholarship

• The scholarship provides a fortnightly stipend with a rate of $15,000 per year (full-time rate) for up to 3.5 years.

Requirements for University of Melbourne Postgraduate Scholarship Qualification

To be considered for this scholarship, you must:

• Have applied for and meet the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy – Science
• Be undertaking research in the field of equine health

Conditions

Recipients must:

• Maintain satisfactory academic progress during their candidature
• Agree to the University sharing their name and course details with the donor of their scholarship and provide a note of appreciation or a brief report on the benefits of the scholarship if requested.

Interview date, Process and Venue for University of Melbourne Postgraduate Scholarship

• The scholarship is offered to the graduate researcher(s) ranked highest by the selection panel based on the quality of their application and entry score, and their financial need score. Preference will be given to graduate researchers undertaking research into the treatment of illnesses and injuries from which racehorses and quarter horses are prone to suffer if they are ranked in the top 75% of applicants. In the interests of equitable distribution of scholarships, other scholarships received by graduate researchers will be taken into consideration.

How to Apply

You must submit the University Financial Assessment from and an application, and include:

• Personal statement addressing the purpose of your research and your commitment to equine health
• Curriculum vitae including leadership experience, publications or presentations related to your field of research
• Statement of support from your supervisor

When will I know the outcome?

• Round 1 (Jan-March applications): May-July
• Round 2 (June-August applications): September-October
