University Of Montreal 2023-2024 Exemption Scholarship Program for International Students, Canada

To support talents from all around the world, The UdeM exemption scholarship program is designed to support international candidates in their university studies. Starting in the fall of 2020, they could benefit from an exemption from the tuition fees normally charged to international students. The granting of scholarships continues for the winter 2023, summer 2023, fall 2023 and winter 2024 sessions.

The goal of this new program is to help the best talent from around the world attend one of the finest francophone research universities in the world. In turn, these international students will help fulfil our educational mission by enriching the cultural diversity of the Université de Montréal community.

About University of Montreal

Also called UdeM, the University of Montreal is a non-private research institution of higher education in the Québec province of Canada. The University was founded in 1878 founded, with three faculties: theology, law and medicine. Earlier University of Montreal was situated in Montreal's Quartier Latin but later in 1942, it moved to Mount Royal. It got the status of a secular establishment in the year 1967. Amount of the award

Please note that the amounts indicated below are in Canadian dollars.

Undergraduate programs

The excellence of your academic record is the only evaluation criterion to determine the value of the scholarship. This assessment is made based on the transcripts provided during the admission application. The results of the analysis are classified into the following three levels.

  • Level A: $13,340.40 per year (2 sessions, equivalent to 30 credits) or $6,670.20 per session (15 credits) or $444.68 per credit

  • Level B: $6,357.60 per year (2 sessions, equivalent to 30 credits) or $3,178.80 per session (15 credits) or $211.92 per credit

  • Level C: $2,223.90 per year (2 sessions, equivalent to 30 credits) or $1,111.95 per session (15 credits) or $7.13 per credit

Students enrolled in a certificate, major, minor, short program and preparatory year program for university studies automatically obtain the level C award.

These amounts are applied to tuition fees of $27,101.70 per year (30 credits)*.

Requirements for University of Montreal Undergraduate Scholarship Qualification

This scholarship program for exemption from additional tuition fees is intended for international students International students (except French and French-speaking Belgian students). To be eligible, the candidate must:

  • have received an offer of admission to a study program at UdeM as of Fall 2020
  • have valid study authorizations (CAQ and study permit) for all sessions of their study program. For more information, please see the web page on administrative and immigration procedures
  • be continuously enrolled full time (unless absence is approved) for their entire study program
  • not benefit from another form of tuition fee exemption
  • not enrolled in an independent study program

If one of the above conditions is not met, the UdeM exemption scholarship may be withdrawn.

Official application deadlines

Make sure to check the application deadlines of the graduate or postgraduate programs that you’re interested before submitting your application, as the dates vary from one program to another. You can submit several admission applications for the same study session, as long as you don’t exceed 10 program choices, for all levels combined. 

The official dates for submitting an application are detailed below. However, application deadlines shown in program descriptions take precedence over those shown below, and could be extended for some programs. 

Summer: Session unfolding from April to June

For graduate (master's, specialized graduate diploma referred to as DESS, microprogram) and postgraduate programs (PhD, doctorate):

  • Start of application period: August 15th of preceding year
  • End of application period for all candidates: February 1st

Fall: Session unfolding from August to December 

For graduate (master's, specialized graduate diploma referred to as DESS, microprogram) and postgraduate programs (PhD, doctorate): 

  • Start of application period: August 15th of preceding year
  • End of application period for all candidates: February 1st

Winter: Session unfolding from January to April 

For graduate (master's, specialized graduate diploma referred to as DESS, microprogram) and postgraduate programs (PhD, doctorate): 

  • Start of application period: February 1st
  • End of application period for all candidates: September 1st

Aim and Benefits of University of Montreal Masters Scholarship

Graduate programs - Masters

To support you in your graduate studies as an international student, a partial exemption scholarship from the additional tuition fees normally charged to international students is available.

  • Non-research: $10,474.65 per year (3 sessions, equivalent to 45 credits) or $3,491.55 per session (equivalent to 15 credits) or $232.77 per credit

This amount is applied to tuition fees of $30,829.50 per year (45 credits)*.

  • Research: $10,347.75 per year (3 sessions, equivalent to 45 credits) or $3,449.25 per session (equivalent to 15 credits) or $229.95 per credit

This amount is applied to tuition fees of $29,592 per year (45 credits)*.

For the writing and correction sessions, the same tuition fees as those charged to Québec students will be applied.

Aim and Benefits of University of Montreal PhD Scholarship

Graduate programs - PhD

To support you in your graduate studies as an international student, a complete waiver of the additional tuition fees normally charged to international students is available.

This exemption bursary allows you to benefit from the same tuition fees as Québec graduate studies students.

  • $22,241.25 per year (3 sessions, equivalent to 45 credits) or $7,413.75 per session (equivalent to 15 credits) or $494.25 per credit

This amount is applied to the tuition fees of $26,562.60 per year (45 credits)*.

For the writing and correction sessions, the same tuition fees as those charged to Québec students will be applied.

How to Apply

Interested and qualified? Go to University of Montreal on admission.umontreal.ca to apply

1. Apply for admission

2. Follow-up on your file and receive an offer of admission

  • A few days after submitting your admissions application, you will receive your access codes for the "Student Centre." This is the platform where you can monitor your application and receive your offer of acceptance letter.

3. Accept the offer of admissions to start the evaluation.

  • You don’t have to apply for a UdeM Exemption Scholarship. New candidates’ files will be evaluated to determine their eligibility and the amount of their exemption scholarship.

4. Receive the notice of award with the amount

  • After receiving your admissions offer, the Université de Montréal will promptly inform you, by email, of the amount of the scholarship to which you are entitled. Print and keep this document in a safe place. It will be useful for future reference.
