University of Otago Barusch Scholarship in Ageing Studies 2026

Established in 2025 by the University of Otago through a generous donation from Emeritus Professor Amanda Barusch of the University of Otago, a senior academic from the School of Social Sciences with extensive research and teaching experience in the field of gerontology. The purpose of this award is to encourage ageing-themed research projects in the University’s Division of Humanities.
The world is facing unprecedented challenges due to the rapid ageing of its human population, and like other countries, New Zealand has much to learn about older adults, the process of ageing, and what policies and services will best support them to flourish. The findings of the successful applicant’s research should help build our theoretical and practical understanding of older adults and the ageing process. They might even point the way towards new policies and programmes in this area.

Aim and Benefits of University of Otago Postgraduate Scholarship

• $7,000

Requirements for University of Otago Postgraduate Scholarship Qualification

Applicants must be:

• enrolled (or about to enrol) in a Master’s or PhD degree in the Division of Humanities featuring research with a primary focus on gerontology and human ageing.

The following factors shall be considered in selecting the scholarship recipient:

• The degree to which an applicant’s (proposed) research project is focussed on human ageing
• The extent to which the findings of their research project could contribute to the theoretical and practical understanding of older adults and the ageing process in New Zealand
• The nature of the applicant’s interest in the field of gerontology
• Any community work or volunteer service undertaken relating to older adults
