Established in 1998 by a bequest by Howard Sleath of 50% of his estate to The University of Queensland. Mr Howard Sleath was well-known to instrumentalists throughout Australia for the excellence of his craftsmanship and skill as a maker of stringed instruments.

Mr Sleath gave the State of Queensland a string quartet of instruments to be kept under the supervision of the Head of the School of Music. The instruments were first demonstrated by the Mayne String Quartet at a concert to inaugurate the Howard Sleath Quartet of Instruments in 1974.

• Applicants must take auditions on an orchestral stringed instrument played with a bow for the Bachelor of Music (Honours) program to the Head, by the closing date for applications; and
• Applicants must be enrolled full-time in the first year of the program.
