Value Learning 2023 Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program (AIYEP)

Are you aged between 21 and 25 years ? Do you have a passion for learning about Indonesian culture while you develop skills and share your Australian culture?  The Australian Indonesian Youth Exchange Program (AIYEP) is designed especially for you!

Be one of the 21 Indonesians and 21 Australians who share eight weeks interacting and engaging with each,  program alumni and others who hold influence and experience in the Australia-Indonesia diplomatic, academic and business world.

The program has two  main components: Online and In-country experience.

Value Learning has been appointed to deliver the Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program (AIYEP) for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Australia-Indonesia Institute. Established in 1982,  AIYEP links youth (21-25 years old) in Australia and Indonesia through social, professional, and cultural exchange. It is a chance for participants to grow their intercultural skills, professional experiences, and international networks. The Australia-Indonesia Institute, an initiative of the Australian Government, is proud to support this project as part of its mission to deepen community and institutional links between Australia and Indonesia.

The Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program is honoured to have The Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret'd) as its patron.  

Overview

Participants will engage online for 4 weeks getting to know each other working through the Global Competence Certificate and preparing for an experience in another culture.  Then, each group will spend four weeks in each other’s countries. While abroad participants will stay with host families, complete a three-week work experience with a local businesses or organisation and  engage in special events and take part in an Australia-Indonesia Youth Forum.

Brought to you by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and Value Learning, AIYEP combines online learning; in-country experience living with a host family, a business internship, language skills, access to Australian-Indonesian experts and opportunities to build on your intercultural skills in this comprehensive seven week program.

Aim and Benefits of Value Learning Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program (AIYEP)

This fully funded program aims to provide opportunities for young people from Indonesia and Australia to gain a better understanding of the culture, development and way of life of each other's country. AIYEP alumni form a vibrant group whose members have gone on to work in areas with a continuing involvement in the bilateral relationship. Indicative dates for AIYEP are from 4 October 2023 to 8 January 2024.

Online and in country delivery

The 2023 edition of the Australia Indonesia Youth Exchange Program will be delivered online for the first four weeks, followed by four weeks in country in keeping with the following goals:

  • Provide opportunities for young people from Indonesia and Australia to work together online to gain a better understanding of the culture, development, and way of life of each other's country,

  • Form a vibrant group of young people who are committed to the improvement and strengthening of bilateral relationships, and

  • Provide young Indonesians and Australians with an opportunity to gain valuable work experience and mentoring in their field of interest with a focus on a project related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

In-country experience

While abroad participants will:

  • stay with host families

  • complete a 3-week internship with local businesses and organisations

  • engage in special events and take part in an Australia-Indonesia Youth Forum

Requirements for Value Learning Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program (AIYEP) Qualification

Applications are open for Australian citizens and permanent residents aged between 21 and 25 years to join the Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program (AIYEP). AIYEP is a one of a kind, highly successful program marking its 41st year in 2023. Twenty-one Indonesians and twenty-one Australians aged 21–25 years will spend thirteen weeks (October to January) interacting and engaging both online and in person.

Indonesian group  in Australia: 4 November  to 6 December, 2023

All participants meet in Canberra and Youth Forum: 3 - 6 December 2023

Australian group in Indonesia: 6 December 2023 to 8 January 2024

Your Time Commitment

  • 8 Weeks:

  • 4 weeks  online learning ( 2 hours per week)

  • 4 weeks in-country experience

  • and internship

This application is for the Australian participants on AIYEP and is only open to Australian citizens and permanent residents.

Please note that participants will need their own reliable device and internet connection to engage in the program. Participants will also need to have a passport valid for 6 months from the start of the program.
