Sir John Marshall Scholarship was established in 1980 by the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, the Rt. Hon. Sir John Marshall, GBE, CH, BA, LLM, Hon. LLD, to encourage the study of Political Science at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. The Scholarship was extended to include International Relations.

Requirements for Victoria University of Wellington Sir John Marshall Scholarship Qualification

  • Applicants must have completed 100 level POLS or INTP at the time they complete the application.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in 200 level POLS or INTP courses at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington before the scholarship is paid.

Interview date, Process and Venue for Victoria University of Wellington Sir John Marshall Scholarship

Selection criteria:

  • Applicants will be assessed on academic merit.

  • Applicants must be intending to major in Political Science or International Relations.

Selection process:

  • Selection will be made by the Head of the School of History, Philosophy, Political Science and International Relations will convene the appropriate panel to assess applications.

Additional information:

  • The recipient must be enrolled at 200 level POLS or INTP course at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington before the scholarship is paid. The Scholarship will be paid as a stipend in one lump sum after the cut-off date for course withdrawal

  • The name of the recipient will be inscribed on the Honours Board at the premises of the Political Science and International Relations Programme.

  • The recipient will be asked to write a letter of appreciation to the donor’s family, which will be forwarded appropriately.

Scholarship specific documentation

  • Personal statement explaining why they think they should be awarded this scholarship and outlining their intention to major in Political Science or International relations

  • Academic transcript

How to Apply

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
