Wellcome Trust 2022 Global Health Research in Africa Doctoral Training Programme for African Researchers

This Wellcome Trust funded Programme is focusing on funding up to 5 PhD Fellowships per year, for 5 years and runs from 2022 to 2027 and will fund 25 Fellowships in total. It is open to early career healthcare professionals that have a focus on improving health and wellbeing in Africa. Applications from nurses, midwives, and allied health professionals (NMAHPs) are actively encouraged.

This Programme is a partnership between LSHTM and four other UK universities – Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS), Kings College London (KCL), Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), and St George’s University of London (SGUL), as well as six African Partner Institutions – Biomedical Research and Training Institute (BRTI, Zimbabwe), Zvitambo Institute for Maternal and Child Health Research (Zimbabwe), Medical Research Council Gambia (MRCG), Medical Research Council Uganda (MRCU), Centre for Innovative Drug Development and Therapeutic Trials for Africa (CDT-Africa, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia), Zambart (Zambia).

Aim and Benefits of Wellcome Trust Global Health Research in Africa Doctoral Training Programme

  • Medical doctors, dentists and vets will be placed on the standard clinical academic salary scale for doctors in formal clinical training in the range £39,467 to £53,077 plus £2,162 London allowance where applicable.
  • NMAHPS will be placed on the appropriate scale of their employing institution, and could be in the range of £39,304 to £44,634. Placement on the scales will be according to an appointee’s current salary, stage of training (if applicable) and transitional pay arrangements and will be subject to approval by the employing institution.

Requirements for Wellcome Trust Global Health Research in Africa Doctoral Training Programme Qualification

  • This Programme is aimed at supporting health professionals who wish to undertake rigorous research training.  Support is for three years (or part-time equivalent) and includes an NHS matched salary, research expenses, home rate tuition fees, and training and travel costs. Applicants must be practising healthcare professionals and be registered with a national professional regulatory body in the UK/Republic of Ireland (eg – General Medical Council, Health and Care Professions Council). Medical graduates must be registered on a UK/Republic of Ireland specialist training programme or must be a registered GP.
  • Appointments will be made to match an appointee’s current NHS salary (Junior Doctors/Dentists, GPs, nurses, midwives and allied health professionals (NMAHPS)) plus London allowance if applicable.

  • All applicants should not have more than 10 years whole time equivalent (WTE) career experience (calculated taking into account parental, medical and other formally documented leave) after full professional qualification at the time of applying.
  • All applicants must have an interest in global health research and be looking to develop their academic career.
  • All applicants must have completed their undergraduate degree.
  • Applicants should maintain their clinical skills, if applicable.

Interview date, Process and Venue for Wellcome Trust Global Health Research in Africa Doctoral Training Programme

  • Fellows will have the choice of registering for their PhD in their home country or at one of the UK partner institutions.
  • Applicants should be interested in spending extended periods of time at one of the Programme African Partner Institutions in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, The Gambia, and Uganda as part of their PhD, and will spend a minimum of 12 months in country.
  • This is a full time, fixed term post (part-time equivalent is available) funded by The Wellcome Trust based at one of the partner/host institutions: The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, King’s College London, Queen Mary University of London, St George’s, University of London or Brighton and Sussex Medical School. Candidates accept that, if successful, they may be awarded a fellowship at any of the five partner institutions.
