Wits 2021 Aubrey Sheiham PhD Research Fellowship

The School of Public Health (SPH), University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), invites applications for ONE three-year doctoral scholarship for candidates interested in researching health inequality, inequity and social determinants of health.

 Research topics could include but need not be limited to infectious diseases, environmental health, non-communicable diseases and mental health.  This fellowship has been made possible by an endowment from Wits alumnus, dentist and epidemiologist the late Professor Aubrey Sheiham.

Requirements for Aubrey Sheiham PhD Research Fellowship Qualification

We are looking for talented, motivated South African candidates who meet the following requirements:

  • A masters’ degree in a quantitative discipline e.g. public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics, psychology or a similar discipline.
  • A research interest in health inequalities and the social determinants of health at population level i.e. not limited to individuals at high risk of particular disease outcomes.
  • A track record and commitment to publishing research findings in peer reviewed journals.
  • English language proficiency as well as good conceptual and writing skills.
  • Openness to inter-disciplinary perspectives on health inequalities.
  • Collegiality and an interest in team work.

Selection:

  • The fellowship is tenable for a period of three years, and candidates are expected to have completed the PhD by the end of this period. Please note that the successful fellow will need to apply to the Wits SPH interdisciplinary PhD programme and that the scholarship is contingent on being accepted into the programme. The fellow will receive support to apply to the above-mentioned PhD programme.
