Prompt Explanation
This prompt wants to see that you understand your programme structure and have thought about why each part matters, not just what you will study, but what you will gain and how it connects to your goals.
Winning Structure
Paragraph 1 Semester One: Foundations establish the academic groundwork. Show the reviewer that you understand why the foundational modules matter and how they set up everything that follows.
What to include in your essay:
The core modules you will study in semester one.
Why those specific modules are the right starting point for your goals.
What skill or lens you expect to develop that you do not currently have.
Paragraph 2 Semester Two: Applied and Policy Learning. Move from theory to application. Show how the second semester builds on the first and sharpens your ability to engage with real-world health systems and policy environments.
What to include in your essay:
The applied modules and what they equip you to do practically.
How health policy analysis connects to the kind of work you intend to do at home.
Why understanding the social determinants of health is essential for your specific context.
Paragraph 3 Dissertation: The Culminating Work. Show that your dissertation is not just an academic requirement but a piece of work that directly serves your development goals. The topic should feel like the natural conclusion of everything studied before it.
What to include in your essay:
Your dissertation topic and the specific question you intend to investigate.
The methodology or approach you plan to use.
How the findings will be applicable or transferable to your home context.
The thread connecting your full programme to your post-study plans.

For Masters
PARAGRAPH 1
My programme is spread out over four semesters. In the first semester, I am going to focus on learning the basics that the rest of my degree is based on. This means I will be studying epidemiology a lot. I want to learn how to read and understand population health data. I will also be looking at health systems, how they work, especially in places like Nigeria, where people do not have a lot of money.
Technique: This paragraph establishes the academic foundation clearly and connects it to context from the start. Naming Nigeria specifically in the first paragraph signals that the applicant is not studying in the abstract; every module is being filtered through the lens of home. The plain, direct tone works in its favour; it reads as honest rather than performed.
Breakdown:
"The basics that the rest of my degree is based on" shows the applicant understands programme architecture, not just module names.
Naming epidemiology specifically and stating what it will teach is more credible than listing a module title alone.
"Especially in places like Nigeria, where people do not have a lot of money" grounds the academic content in development reality immediately.
The paragraph would be strengthened by one sentence explaining what gap in your current knowledge epidemiology specifically fills.
