Essay Prompt
“How do you intend to apply your new skills and qualifications when you return home?”
Sub Prompts
You may wish to reference innovation and application of knowledge at a global, national or local level and to include intended methodologies and implementation strategies
(Up to 200 words)
Prompt Explanation
This prompt is not asking what you hope will happen. It is asking what you intend to do. That distinction matters. Hope is uncertain; intention is directional. What decisions have you already made about where you will work and what you will prioritise? What will be different in your country because you got awarded this scholarship?
Winning Structure
Paragraph 1 Immediate Entry Point
Open with the first concrete step you will take after returning. Name the type of institution or sector you are targeting and explain why positioning yourself inside that system rather than outside it. What to include in your essay:
The specific institution, agency, or sector you intend to enter.
Why insider access matters for the kind of change you want to drive.
The mindset you are bringing into that role — learning, observing, positioning.
Paragraph 2 Applying the Skills
Connect what the programme gave you directly to a systemic problem you intend to address. Name the frameworks or tools you will use and explain what structural change you are working toward. Make the case that this issue deserves to be taken seriously at the level you are targeting. What to include in your essay:
The specific skill or framework from your programme and how you will use it.
The systemic gap or problem you are addressing.
Why that problem has been neglected and why it now needs urgent attention.
Paragraph 3 Community-Level Action and Methodology
Move from the institutional level down to the community. Show that your approach is locally designed, not imported. Close with a clear statement of method and a final line that connects the programme to your ability to execute the plan. What to include in your essay:
The community-level intervention you intend to lead.
Why your approach is designed for your specific local context.
Your core methodology, stated simply and confidently.
A closing line that ties the scholarship to the missing piece in your plan.

For Masters
PARAGRAPH 1 The first thing I will do is seek a role within a public health institution or government health agency where mental health policy is either being shaped or thoroughly neglected. Not just stay on the outside looking in, but inside the rooms where public health decisions are made.
Technique:
This paragraph opens with intention, not aspiration. The specificity of "inside the rooms where public health decisions are made" immediately signals that the applicant understands where change actually happens. The contrast between "shaped" and "thoroughly neglected" is sharp and honest — it shows awareness of political reality without cynicism.
Breakdown:
"The first thing I will do" establishes immediacy and signals that the plan is already formed, not hypothetical.
Naming both institutions where policy is being shaped and those where it is neglected shows strategic thinking, the applicant is not waiting for ideal conditions.
"Not just stay on the outside looking in" frames the ambition as insider influence, which is exactly the kind of leadership Chevening is looking for.

Growing up in a community where young people had limited access to career guidance, I quickly realized the importance of leadership in creating opportunities for others. During my undergraduate studies, I founded a student mentorship initiative that connected over 300 students with academic and career mentors. Through strategic partnerships, volunteer coordination, and weekly training sessions, the initiative significantly improved awareness of scholarship opportunities among students...
