Essay Prompt

“How will the impact of your work be measured and evidenced?”

Sub Prompts

Please include details of what indicators are used to measure this impact. You may need to detail small and incremental changes as well as more significant growth

Prompt Explanation

This prompt asks you to show that your ambitions are accountable. How will you know your work actually made a difference, and how will you prove it to others? Make sure it is something feasible and measurable.

Winning Structure

Paragraph 1
Measuring Reach: Explain the first and most immediate layer of measurement. Who was trained, how many facilities were reached, how many people had access to something they did not have before?

What to include in your essay:

  • The specific indicators you will track at the output level.
  • Why those numbers matter as a starting point for evidence.

Paragraph 2
Measuring Utilisation and Behaviour: Move beyond counting infrastructure to measuring whether people are actually using and benefiting from what has been built.

What to include:

  • The utilisation data you intend to collect.
  • What sustained engagement — return visits, referrals, continued use. Tells you that outputs are becoming outcomes.
  • Why this layer of evidence is more honest than infrastructure counts alone.

Paragraph 3
Measuring Attitudinal Change: Describe the longer-term evidence you are most interested in, shifts in how communities think, talk, and behave around the issue.

What to include:

  • The tools you will use: surveys, focus groups, longitudinal tracking.
  • How you will distinguish genuine attitudinal change from surface-level awareness.
  • Why this is the most meaningful but most difficult layer of evidence to capture.

Paragraph 4
Documentation as Evidence: Explain your commitment to recording everything, not just outcomes, but process. What worked, what failed, and what the next person needs to know.

What to include:

  • The kinds of documentation you intend to produce: case studies, implementation records, field notes.
  • Why documentation serves both accountability and knowledge transfer.
  • How leaving a clear record reduces the cost of the next person starting similar work.

PARAGRAPH 1

Measurement in public health, especially in Nigeria, is where a lot of good work fades. Data collection is not carried out properly, and reports are not reliable. People often say they have made a difference without any proof. But that is the reason I take this question seriously. The most immediate thing I can measure is reach. How many primary healthcare workers have been trained to identify and respond to mental health conditions? How many facilities have added even a basic mental health component to their services? Those numbers are trackable, and they matter.

Technique:
This paragraph opens by naming the systemic problem with measurement before explaining the applicant's own approach. That sequence is important — it shows self-awareness about the environment the work will happen in. The use of direct questions as evidence markers is an effective technique; it makes the indicators feel real and specific rather than abstract.

Breakdown:

  • Opening with the measurement failure in Nigerian public health immediately signals that the applicant is operating with eyes open, not naively.
  • "People often say they have made a difference without any proof" is a quiet but pointed critique that positions the applicant as someone who holds themselves to a higher standard.
  • The two questions about trained workers and equipped facilities are the right level of specificity — trackable, meaningful, and directly connected to the development goal.

Growing up in a community where young people had limited access to career guidance, I quickly realized the importance of leadership in creating opportunities for others. During my undergraduate studies, I founded a student mentorship initiative that connected over 300 students with academic and career mentors. Through strategic partnerships, volunteer coordination, and weekly training sessions, the initiative significantly improved awareness of scholarship opportunities among students...
