Essay Prompt

“Summarise the ways in which you have engaged in voluntary activities and the opportunities you have had to demonstrate leadership”

Prompt Explanation

This prompt is asking for a specific story that shows both voluntary service and leadership in the same account. It is not asking for a list of activities. It wants one or two experiences told with enough detail that the committee can see what you did, why you did it, and what it produced.

Winning Structure

Paragraph 1
The Gap You Noticed

Open with the specific observation that prompted action. Not a general statement about student unpreparedness but the precise thing you saw that bothered you enough to do something about it. End the paragraph at the moment you decided to act.

What to include in your essay:

  • The specific problem you observed among your peers.
  • Why it bothered you personally.
  • The decision to do something despite having no resources or official backing.

Paragraph 2
What You Built and How

Show the committee exactly what you did. Not a summary but a narration. What did the workshop look like? What did you teach? How did you handle the different needs in the room? Show the committee that the leadership was practical, specific, and responsive.

What to include in your essay:

  • The specific content and format of the workshop.
  • The skills you taught and the people you brought in.
  • How the workshop grew and how you adapted to that growth.

Paragraph 3
What It Produced and What It Meant

Close with the outcome and the reflection. Name the specific impact, the students who came back to tell you they got jobs. Then close with a short, honest statement of why you did it that is not about recognition.

What to include in your essay:

  • The specific outcome and evidence of impact.
  • What the feedback from those students meant to you.
  • A closing sentence that states your motivation plainly and confidently.

For Masters

PARAGRAPH 1

In the months leading up to graduation, I noticed something that really bothered me. A lot of my peers were about to leave university with no idea what came next. They had grades, but they were not prepared. Their resumes did not show how great they were; they did not know how to find opportunities, especially outside the walls of the university. Nobody was helping them, so I decided to do something.

Technique:

This paragraph opens with discomfort before it opens with action, which is the right sequence. The committee needs to feel the problem before they can appreciate the response. The phrase "nobody was helping them, so I decided to do something" is deceptively simple. It contains the entire leadership logic of the essay: a gap existed, no one filled it, and the applicant chose to. There is no self-congratulation here. Just a clear account of a decision made in the absence of anyone else making it.

Breakdown:

  • "Something that really bothered me" is honest and human before it is strategic.
  • "They had grades, but they were not prepared" is a precise diagnosis of the gap between academic achievement and professional readiness.
  • "Nobody was helping them" removes any ambiguity about whether this was a chosen initiative or an assigned one.

Growing up in a community where young people had limited access to career guidance, I quickly realized the importance of leadership in creating opportunities for others. During my undergraduate studies, I founded a student mentorship initiative that connected over 300 students with academic and career mentors. Through strategic partnerships, volunteer coordination, and weekly training sessions, the initiative significantly improved awareness of scholarship opportunities among students...
