Annual World Press Photo Contest 2024

The annual World Press Photo Contest recognizes and celebrates the best photojournalism and documentary photography produced over the last year, selected by an international independent jury. Entering is free and prizes include up to €6,000, inclusion in our annual traveling exhibition, and more.

Aim and Benefits of World Press Photo Annual Contest

Entering the World Press Photo Contest is free and open to all professional photographers working in the field of photojournalism and/or documentary photography.
 

As a winner, your work will be:

  • Included in our annual traveling exhibition seen by over 4 million visitors, shown around the world in over 80 cities
  • Published on our website and social platforms with over 2 million followers
  • Included in our yearbook

You will also receive:

  • €1,000 for each of the 24 regional winners and an additional €5,000 for the four global winners
  • An invitation to the Winners’ Program in Amsterdam
  • A physical award
  • For the four global winners: a FUJIFILM GFX100 II camera, with two lenses of choice, two Li-ion batteries, and dual battery charger

Requirements for World Press Photo Annual Contest Qualification

The World Press Photo contest is open to professional photographers working in the field of journalism and/or documentary photography. You do not need to have a press card, but you do have to provide a document with a valid date that confirms your current professional status. We accept a range of different documents because we recognize “professional” is a broad term. Read more about what we accept as proof in our entry rules.

  • Entries open: 1 December 2023, 13.00 CET (Amsterdam time)
  • Entries close: 11 January 2024, 13.00 CET (Amsterdam time)
  • Regional winners announcement: 3 April 2024
  • Global winners announcement: 18 April 2024
  • Flagship World Press Photo Exhibition 2024 opens in Amsterdam: 19 April 2024

To get started, make sure you have read the entry rulesinformation about the categoriescode of ethicsguidance on how to write captionstechnical requirements, and verification process (including manipulation rules).
 

The 2024 World Press Photo Contest is open for entries until 11 January 2024, 13.00 CET. To enter the contest, follow these steps: 

1. Create your personal Picter account here.

If you have entered the World Press Photo Contest on Picter in the last three years, you can log in using the same login details you previously used. 

2. Register for the 2024 World Press Photo Contest on Picter.

This requires your personal data as well as your proof of professional status. You can register until 11 January 2024, 13.00 CET. If you’re a new entrant (have not entered the contest in the last three years), your registration will be reviewed to ensure it meets our entry rules. We reserve the right to ask for additional information to help clarify your professional status.
 

Did you know?

You do not have to provide a press card as proof of your professional status, there are several other ways to provide this information. For example, a membership document or recommendation letter from a recognized photographic association, or at least one proof of publication from 2022 or 2023 with your name visible as credit. Take a look at our entry rules to see which documents we accept as proof

3. While your registration is under review, you can already upload your work, and add captions, metadata, and other information.

Photographs entered into the Singles, Stories, and Long-Term Projects categories must comply with our rules on manipulation and must not be altered by adding, rearranging, reversing, distorting or removing people and/or objects from within the frame. All entries must have accurate captions and descriptions, written in English. Captions must contain all the information described in the guidance on how to write captions.


Did you know?

Captions can be translated into English using tools such as Google Translation. If the captions have been translated, please also provide the original caption.

4. Submit your entries before the deadline of 11 January 2024, 13.00 CET.

Until the deadline, you can always log back into your account and edit your submission. After editing, make sure to resubmit your entry so it will be seen by the jury.
