Max Planck Institute Doctoral Positions in Evolutionary Biology 2027

The Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön is an internationally oriented institution whose research focuses on the principles, mechanisms and effects of evolutionary change. Around 200 employees from more than 30 nations currently work at our institute in the departments of Theoretical Biology and Microbial Population Biology, as well as in several independent research groups.

Max Planck Institute offer six doctoral positions (m/f/d) at the International Max Planck Research School for Evolutionary Biology.

The program starts in September 2027.

The International Max Planck Research School for Evolutionary Biology (IMPRS EvolBio) is a joint initiative between the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology, Christian Albrechts University in Kiel, and the GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research.

The research

IMPRS EvolBio offers a doctoral program that delivers outstanding opportunities for young scientists. It provides an internationally competitive research environment with state-of-the-art facilities. Participating groups work on a wide variety of scientific topics, including molecular evolution, experimental evolution, behavioral ecology, ecological / evolutionary genetics, theoretical and mathematical biology, and major evolutionary transitions. The program includes a six-month training period followed by a three-year doctoral project.

Requirements for Doctoral Positions (m/f/d) | Evolutionary Biology PhD Position Qualification

• Hold, or expect to hold, a Master of Science degree (or Diploma) by your start date,
• Be able to show that your interests, skills and knowledge match well with the chosen area of doctoral research,
• Be able to demonstrate a high level of written and spoken English,
• Possess a high level of motivation.

• 22 October - 10 January: Application phase (contact with principal investigator encouraged but not necessary)
• 12 Jan - 12 Feb: First round of interviews (online only)
• 25 February: Invitations to Selection Symposium sent by email
• 26-27 April: Selection Symposium in MPI (final round of interviews, in-person)
• 30 April: Successful candidates informed by email
• 1 September: Start of program
